🌧 Let me be vulnerable for a moment. 🌈
As I reflect on my journey, from the daughter of immigrants to a proud MBA holder, I am filled with immense gratitude and a sense of responsibility to share my story with other first-generation students striving to carve their own paths.
My parents, both hardworking immigrants, instilled in my sister and me the transformative power of education. They believed it was the gateway to opportunities far beyond those they had access to. Despite their unwavering support, the path was not always clear or easy. I still vividly remember the anxiety of taking the Gifted and Talented test without knowing what to expect, too nervous to even ask questions.
Throughout my K-12 years, I excelled academically, engaged in numerous extracurriculars, and volunteered regularly, fueled by a love for learning and overcoming challenges. However, when it came time to apply to college, economic realities bit hard—application fees alone seemed a hurdle too high at times. I set my sights on Georgetown University, undeterred by the daunting costs and the discouragement from unexpected quarters.
I remember walking into my counselor's office to ask for a fee waiver voucher, only to be met with skepticism. She questioned my choice, suggesting a local community college instead. Her doubt only fueled my resolve. I insisted on applying to Georgetown, determined to prove that my aspirations were not misplaced.
The joy of announcing my acceptance to Georgetown was not just a personal victory; it was a testament to my parents' belief in resilience, curiosity, and bravery. They couldn't guide me through FAFSA applications or internship searches, but they taught me to never give up.
Today, with an MBA and continuous career growth, I reflect on these experiences with a desire to pay it forward. To all first-generation students out there—never underestimate your potential. Your journey will be challenging, but it will also be rewarding.
Let's keep pushing boundaries, asking questions, and breaking barriers. Together, we rise. ✨
