She spoke about our work to recruit Student Success coaches to curb the teacher shortage in New York City. "A lot of mentors come in knowing they want to go into education, and we give them experience in the classroom and training to put them on that path. Then we have a lot of young people who come in and they really don't know what they want to do next, and then they decide over the course of the year that education is the career path for them." That’s why we are working to increase the number of teachers who are well-prepared and certified to improve student outcomes and well-supported to stay in the classroom. In 2024, about 38 percent of new teachers hired in Texas had no teacher certification, up from 12 percent in 2019. The number of uncertified teachers has skyrocketed in some Houston-area districts, including Houston, Aldine, Alief and Spring ISDs. With no end in sight for this trend, here’s what it means for a teacher to be uncertified, the potential impact on students, and what local and state education officials are doing about it.
