Research & Impact Leader @ SHPE | Advancing Hispanic STEM Excellence through DEI Initiatives, Data Analysis, STEM Programming, and Evaluation
What an enriching conversation we had yesterday during our webinar, "US Latino Youth Revolutionizing Engineering & Tech." It was a privilege to share key insights from our recently published report in collaboration with the Latino Donor Collaborative. Kicking off with Kimberly D Douglas (Chief Research & Impact Officer, SHPE) and Ana Valdez (CEO, Latino Donor Collaborative), who delved into crucial highlights from the report, we then engaged in a captivating dialogue with three STEM content creators. Here are my key takeaways: From Diana Iracheta: Emphasizing the significance of role models, particularly seasoned Latina engineers who can mentor the emerging generation of Latina engineers. From Elio Morillo: Stressing the importance of prioritizing physical and mental health, highlighting the mantra, "You need to rest so you can serve." From Jay Flores: Underscoring the importance of simplicity in outreach efforts and advocating for an equity-centric approach from the inception, aiming to keep our Latino youth curious and enthusiastic about STEM careers. Special thanks to Patricia Ramirez Pinckney, Andrea D. Beattie, M.A., and Giovanna Salazar for their outstanding behind-the-scenes support throughout the entire webinar. Your dedication and efforts truly made a difference in ensuring the success of our event. The discussion was truly enlightening, and if you haven't already, I encourage you to download the report (shpe.org/research) and share your thoughts with me! Let's keep the momentum going. 🚀 #STEMRevolution #LatinoYouthInSTEM #EquityInTech #SHPE #SHPEfamilia #YouBelongInSTEM

👩🔬 Redefining STEM education ➡️ Founder at GoINNO | EU projects | Erasmus+ Funding Expert helped 50+ STEM projects come to life | STEM for children | STEM for teachers
𝐎𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐮𝐩𝐨𝐧 𝐚 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐚𝐫, 𝐟𝐚𝐫 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲… That’s how fairytales usually start right? I always loved to read as a little girl but have also, from the bottom of my heart, detested stories like that. Stories that usually finished with saying that the girl - princess usually – waited for her prince somewhere and they got married and lived happily ever after. For me that sounded so boring. I wanted something more. Something meaningful. Not just wait passively for someone to save me and hope for a good life. Now reading to my son, I intentionally avoid reading to him such stories, which are very stereotypical. But with that in mind, I also noticed a gap in presenting girls role models in STEM. Because let’s be honest – how many STEM women have you seen being presented in the media lately? I had no one to look upon as a girl, even though I started to develop interest in STEM – specifically medicine and cancer research… … when I was only 10 years old (shifting from being 100% certain I would be an astrophysicist at NASA… But I realized I am not a fan of physics 😆) Therefore, I felt this is really missing. To have stories for little girls presenting women in STEM. And not only their success but also bumps on their path, the setbacks and sometimes the twist of faith ALMOST finishing their dream. It is crucial we let them know that success does not happen overnight. Yet we need to present it in just the right way to build inspiration. Do you agree? P.S. 𝑰 𝒘𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒔𝒑𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒂 𝒔𝒆𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒕 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆… The STEAM stories can start with “once upon a time…”, but they are far from traditional ones from there on. 😉 🔔 Follow me and stay tuned to hear how this story evolves. #STEAMTales #girlsinSTEM #womeninSTEM #STEMforkids #STEM #education #ErasmusPlus #EUgrants #inspire #GoINNO
