Episode 19 of Offshoot with Eric Naslund, "An Architectural Legacy for Our Grandkids", is live now. Eric is the Co-founder and Principal of Studio E. Studio E is a 30-person, San Diego-based architectural firm that was started by Eric and his partners, 37 years ago. Studioearchitecture.com is his domain, and if you want to see some of what Eric does, and what we’re discussing, I recommend a quick drop into their projects tab. They are an impressive design firm that works on housing, mixed-use, civic, institutional, and urban planning projects. In this insightful conversation, Eric discusses the dichotomy between a practice-centered business and a business-centered practice, emphasizing the importance of remaining mindful that people will ultimately inhabit the spaces they design. He shares his vision of creating environments worth fighting for and highlights the joy of being paid for creativity. He emphasizes the role of experience in artistic growth and discusses turning project constraints into expressions of creativity rather than limitations. He delves into the nuances of managing development constraints, from site specifics to contractual relationships with contractors. Eric challenges the notion that design quality and cost are inherently linked and explores the intricacies of risk management in developer-architect-contractor relationships. He stresses the importance of intentional organizational development and the value of declining projects unless one can provide exceptional value. Eric also reflects on the potential impact of AI on architecture and society, drawing parallels to historical shifts in artistic mediums. He underscores the significance of approaching business partnerships with the same gravity as marriage proposals and acknowledges the resilience required for entrepreneurship, even in challenging times. #offshoot #commercialrealestate #finance #entrepreneurship

🎉 Achievement Unlocked: Town Hall 16 in Clash of Clans! 🏰⚔️ 🎉 I’m excited to share that I’ve officially upgraded to Town Hall 16 in Clash of Clans! While this might seem like a gaming milestone, it actually has a lot in common with what we do as engineers and designers. Here’s how: 🔧 Strategic Thinking: Just like in Clash of Clans, where every base layout and upgrade is carefully planned to withstand attacks, engineering requires thoughtful design and strategic foresight to build systems that can handle real-world challenges. ⚙️ Resource Management: In both the game and in engineering projects, we need to manage resources wisely—whether it’s elixir and gold or time and materials. Efficiency and optimization are key to success. 🛠 Iteration and Improvement: Upgrading your base is never done in one go—it’s a process of trial, error, and constant refinement. This mirrors the iterative nature of engineering, where every project involves prototyping, testing, and fine-tuning. 👨💻 Collaboration: Just like coordinating attacks with your clanmates, teamwork in engineering and design is essential. No successful project is ever done alone, and learning from others strengthens both outcomes and experience. So, while I celebrate my Clash of Clans milestone, I’m reminded of the lessons that extend far beyond the game. Here’s to leveling up in both the virtual and real worlds! 🚀 #Engineering #Design #ClashofClans #StrategicThinking #Iteration #Teamwork #LevelUp

"Architecture continuously reinvents itself; it can and must continue to do so. "So I think given the moment we find ourselves in, it’s important for architecture to drop any remaining internal self-aggrandizing master narratives of 'frozen music,' 'labor of love' etc. and reaffirm itself quite literally and simply as 'work,' i.e. an integral tranche of the tremendous scope of work required in these next 100 years for us to course correct where we’re heading. "And not to get too nerdy, but 'work' literally means 'force' x 'displacement.' It’s well known that architects work long hours with great passion and with great force, but what is the vector of displacement? I believe we have a responsibility and role to play in the design and orientation of that vector." Sometimes it is difficult to pinpoint concrete, tangible and long lasting outputs created through EU projects. But not in this case. In Desire an Irresistible Circular Society, two of our partners 3XN/GXN and Backscatter have produced a toolkit based on their involvement with Domea.dk in Gadehavegaard and with kids from 8 grade classes st a local school. But this is not all. They have also obtained a unique experience involving local children in defining an irresistible circular society in a social housing area. Ideas and solutions they could not have come up with themselves. Ideas that feed into their further work. Solutions that will inform the further concrete development of the area. And something of inspiration for the wider New European Bauhaus movement. For me, this example of concrete, tangible, long-lasting outcome of great value demonstrates why it gives sense to experiment, to engage with new partners and to work across disciplines and cultures. 🌳 Can Children’s vision shape our cities? Should we listen more to young minds when designing? If you ask GXN and Backscatter, the answer is yes. The partners just launched a new toolkit to inspire others to involve young architects 👇 In an insightful interview, we explore GXN and Backscatter's inspiring collaboration with 8th-grade students from Ole Rømer School in Gadehavegaard. In a two-week theme project under the EU-backed DESIRE initiative, these young minds saw their designs and sketches brought to life as realistic renderings and 3D models. Explore the interview, the insights, and the unique toolkit born from this collaboration in our latest impact article that is now out as part of our ‘Meet the Members’ series: https://lnkd.in/d6FzzSxh 👏 Kudos to public housing company Domea.dk, GXN, Backscatter, and collaborators for championing creativity and fostering a new generation of urban designers. Think it, Sketch it, Show it! - Desire toolkit to transform kids’ visions into city realities. In Desire an Irresistible Circular Society, our partner 3XN/GXN and subcontractor AGORA have produced a toolkit based on their involvement with Domea.dk in Gadehavegaard, Denmark and with kids from eighth-grade classes at a local school. Facts about the toolkit - What do you need? The process extends beyond a single day of engagement and requires specific tools and materials. Time Due to the nature of this process, you will need a generous amount of time. We suggest a range of 2-5 days for the on-site workshops + an additonal 3-10 days for visual production. Visual production time depends on number of participants, but expect to spend 3-5 hours per project, depending on the quality you want to achieve. Space Depending on the number of participants, a flexible space is suggested where people can move around, rearrange materials and work in a variety of settings, e.g. plenary presentations, team work, large group discussion, pin-ups. Tools & materials Papers, pencils, markers, projector, tables, scissors, post-its and a variety of specific tools that are in these pages. Participants The format of the workshop has been specifically designed and tested with students (12-17 years old). Despite this, we believe that it can be applied to a wider age range with only minor adaptations. We suggest a proportion of 1-3 facilitators for every 10 students depending on age and abilities. Facilitators and design team Facilitators and a design team are a key presence in workshops. They organise and run the activities, while the design team is responsible for supporting the development of participant ideas, translating them into professional looking projects. Facilitators and the design team might overlap or be different depending on the number of participants** and the project’s budget. Teachers When working with students, teachers are an invaluable resource. Teachers can help refining design challenges and tasks, making them relevant and approachable. Teachers can also help linking design work to topics that have previously been covered in school, thereby facilitating additional learning processes.
