One of the ways we experience connection with others is through the simple question, “What brings you joy?” Healthcare environments are complex, and it can be difficult to see the opportunities for connection with colleagues, patients, and families. Human connection at the bedside changes the care provided and impacts patient outcomes. A critical care nurse caring for a child and while assessing the child, takes a pause and asks the caregiver at the bedside, “Can you tell me about what brings your child joy? What do they love?” This moment opens a longer, genuine conversation where the caregivers find an opening to share their concerns and fears. This simple question promotes seeing the child and caregivers as unique individuals. Building connections with patients, families and colleagues creates joy. It is the joyful part of life to build connections in our community. At Shifting Frames Consulting, one thing that brings us joy is meeting new people and hearing their stories. It is even better if we can chat over a cup of warm tea. LinkedIn community, share in comments what brings you joy?

View the link for a great article shared by American Journal of Nursing (AJN) highlighting the importance of compassion in the nursing profession.
In this month's Reflections column, an NP remembers how compassion kept her hope alive, "I learned from that school nurse that it only takes being present and a simple act of compassion for someone to change the course of another person's life." https://lnkd.in/ekGQPUDu #schoolnurse #compassion #studenthealth

It takes a village.... One of the most important things we impress upon our clinicians is.... Every nursing home is its own little village. They have different challenges. Different Strengths. Different Weaknesses. Different Dynamics. And what works for great for 1 facility, might be a disaster for another. So....yes, we do have systems and processes in place, we do have a playbook for how we will maximize reimbursement and compliance for our clients. But.....before implementing any change, we first listen to the Team at the facility. Because....its their village. They know it best. And once we feel we understand their facility, we can collaborate on how best to apply our systems and processes, to their unique needs. In the words of Sean Covey - "First seek to understand, then to be understood" .

How can a family nurse practitioner build meaningful relationships with their patients? ✏️ Meaningful relationships are about being fully present and creating a therapeutic encounter with each person you see. It requires two ingredients: good energy and plenty of time. For good energy, the provider should be in the “resourceful” state, meaning that he or she feels wholesomely healthy and is fully present. "Plenty of time" means allocating at least 30 minutes per primary care visit which would allow for a meaningful conversation to take place. Good energy and plenty of time create meaningful relationships.
