How to Diagnose Autism ◉ Parent/Caregiver Descriptions: Healthcare providers rely on parents’ or caregivers’ descriptions of the child’s development. These insights help identify any challenges in social communication, interaction, and behavior. ◉ Professional Observation: A healthcare professional (often a psychiatrist or psychologist) observes the child’s behavior. They look for persistent deficits in social communication and interaction, as well as restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior. ◉ DSM-5 Criteria: The American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) provides standardized criteria for diagnosing ASD. To meet these criteria, a child must exhibit specific deficits in social communication and interaction, along with certain types of repetitive behaviors. Follow us to know more about autism... Medications for autism are not a cure, but they can help manage certain behaviors or co-occurring conditions. Here are some commonly used medications: ◉ Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs): These antidepressants may reduce anxiety, irritability, and repetitive actions in autistic individuals. ◉ Antipsychotics: Abilify and Risperdal are FDA-approved for children with autism. They can help with irritability and aggression. Remember, medication is just one part of a comprehensive approach to managing autism. Behavioral therapies and educational programs play a crucial role in supporting individuals with ASD. Note: If you have specific concerns, consult your healthcare professional before having any medicine. Follow us to know more about autism... Today is World Autism Acceptance Day! For us, that means acknowledging that #neurodivergent individuals will experience differences in feeding and eating difficulties compared to the general population, and particularly that #autistic people are disproportionately impacted - up to 37% of people with eating disorders are Autistic, and up to 70% of Autistic people experience difficulties with eating and feeding. It also means acknowledging that treatment approaches may need to adapted and that a person-centred approach that considers the individual's unique needs and context should always be utilitsed as a first point of call. It is important to always ask the individual about their specific support needs. Learning from lived experience is key, which is why we're thrilled to share that our friends at Eating Disorders Neurodiversity Australia have released a series of new fact sheets for allied healthcare professionals, general practitioners, mental health professionals, dietitians, carers, and educators that highlight key considerations and tips to better meet the support and treatment needs of neurodivergent people. ⬇ https://lnkd.in/gGpbv_px

Founder | Disability and Healthcare Advocate | Mom | Nonprofit Consultant | Helping others is a passion, creating change is an aspiration, and being present in the moment is a life long goal.
One study revealed that 10% of caregivers received a diagnosis of PTSD. “Their experience was that the system failed not only to provide support but also created additional trauma.” When the pediatrician gave us a referral for our son to get a formal autism assessment, I thought it would finally give us the answers we desperately needed. Little did I know it would just open Pandora’s box of more questions and confusion. Our education and healthcare systems in America feel impossible to navigate. It’s months of waiting just to get an appointment for an assessment - for a medical diagnosis, it can take more than a year. And when you are in the thick of it, close to getting answers is not close enough. You want to search the internet for help, but what do you search for when you don’t even know the keywords. You want to connect to other people who’ve been in your shoes, but the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) prevent the professionals from helping to make those connections. And then there’s work and other kids and life’s other curve balls - and it feels like you are carrying around a backpack full of rocks. So it’s no surprise that caregivers and parents experience a decline in their mental health. Our systems that support parents, caregivers, and neurodivergent people are fractured, siloed, and hard to navigate. Does it have to be that way? Here’s a no cost solution that professionals can implement today… talk to parents and their kids (because neurodivergent kids are also part of the team) using everyday language. Toss out your fancy acronyms and all the big words you learned in school. Everyone is overwhelmed, and acronyms and jargon filled sentences add to the overwhelm and stress. There is so much we can do to change how the system supports neurodivergent people and their parents/families/caregivers. Let’s start with how we communicate with them. And, if you are a parent or caregiver trying to navigate the system, I would love to connect. I’m working on an app-based solution to make finding the information you need easy, give you the community you crave, and ultimately make the systems work better for our neurodivergent kids. #MentalHealthAwareness #ParentingNeurodivergentKids

Understanding why person-centred care is essential for neurodivergent individuals with eating disorders is key to effective treatment. Here’s why it matters: 1. Unique Needs & Tailored Care: Neurodivergent people, like those with autism or ADHD, experience eating disorders differently. Sensory sensitivities and communication styles require tailored interventions to truly address their needs. 2. Empowerment & Autonomy: By respecting their preferences and involving them in decisions, we give neurodivergent individuals a sense of control over their treatment, leading to better engagement and outcomes. 3. Accurate Diagnosis: Symptoms can present differently in neurodivergent individuals. A person-centred approach helps avoid misdiagnosis by considering their unique context and challenges. 4. Reducing Stigma & Supporting Identity: Validating neurodivergent identities not only reduces stigma but also boosts self-esteem, supporting a more holistic recovery. 5. Building Trust: Trust and effective communication are vital, especially for those who may have had negative experiences in the past. A person-centred approach builds a strong therapeutic relationship. Understanding why it is important to work in a person-centred way with neurodivergent individuals suffering from eating disorders and disordered eating ensures that treatment is respectful, effective, and tailored to the unique needs of the individual. It improves outcomes by fostering a supportive, empathetic, and collaborative therapeutic environment #Neurodiversity #EatingDisorders #PersonCentredCare #MentalHealth #ADHD #Autism

Autism Looks Different in Women, Most of us have spent our lives feeling flawed like we don’t fit into the social norm box. We have heightened sensory sensitivities, and we experience meltdowns when overwhelmed or in sensory overload and often feel shame as if something is wrong with us. Many women have been misdiagnosed or suffering without support because the diagnostic criteria are biased and inaccurate for women. Get clarity with my new Guide for Understanding Autism in Women. Individuals and practitioners can gain a clear understanding, dispel myths, navigate diagnosis complexities, and learn how to support women. Get the guide: https://lnkd.in/gnqGVdFP Let’s all share it with educators and mental & medical health practitioners. 🔊Calling on my Public Health LinkedIn Network! 🔉 We're in the early stages of a Strategic Needs Assessment focusing on Public Health’s role in Neurodiversity, particularly around ADHD, Autism, FASD, and Tourette's. The role of Public Health in neurodiversity is vital due to the significant health inequalities faced by neurodivergent individuals across all age groups. ND people experience higher rates of mental and physical health issues and face greater barriers to healthcare access than neurotypical individuals. Neurodivergent people are more likely to struggle with anxiety, depression, and obesity, and are at a much higher risk of suicide. In addition, they face challenges in employment, and debt, and are more vulnerable to sexual abuse, trauma, and involvement in the criminal justice system, all while also having higher rates of comorbidities. While working on this, what are other Public Health departments doing in the field of neurodiversity? Is it a specific workstream or area of focus for you? Have you conducted a needs assessment on it? If anyone can connect me with relevant work or is interested in collaborating on this project, I’d love to hear from you! 😊 Tag colleagues or share. #Neurodiversity #PublicHealth #StrategicNeedsAssessment #MentalHealth #ADHD #Autism #FASD #Tourettes #HealthInequalities #Collaboration #CultureChange Thomas Dunn James Creaghan Marina Fournier James Lewis Robyn McCarthy Nilam Prinjha Simon Harvey Public Health England
