Many drills are more effective when used in combination with other drills. It’s the SEQUENCE of drills within a set that can make a big difference. A simple example for improving freestyle timing would be the following: Underwater recovery Over-under freestyle (one arm recovered over the water) Freestyle Swimmers feel effective timing on the first drill and then use the intermediate drill to learn to transition that awareness to regular freestyle. Another example could be: Vertical breaststroke kicking Breaststroke on a board 2P1K Breast swim Work on a skill insolation and build it into the stroke. And in each case, you can challenge those skills and work them HARD.

I am a big fan of introducing early vertical/horizontal running drills and tempo runs with „relatively“ higher speed <70%MSS in intermittent fashion than long slow jogs.

Early/ Introductory COD Drills Here’s a couple of drills that I like to introduce early on as from a change of direction perspective, to familiarise the athlete with some different movement problems to solve. Typically we are looking at the ability to manipulate their COM, trunk positioning/ postures, foot placement and ability to decelerate as some key focus points to build upon. Preparing footballers for performing isn't just about physical preparation or technical execution, it's about harmonizing both. A well-prepared player has the blend of being physically ready to compete, as well as having the exposure to technical actions such as ball control or passing accuracy. The key to success as a performance or fitness coach is being able to use the short period of time you have to integrate both aspects in a clear and concise way, delivering the most prepared player to the Coaching Staff for their session. Factoring his movement profile (ground force ) and personal motor preferences makes a huge difference. Spend time outside the field and get to know your athletes!!! His numbers are up 20% from this time last year but even more importantly his barrel awareness off the plate is tremendous. Learning to hit bad pitches is a vital attribute for long term hitting success. He has also increased his deep core and hip stability which in my opinion is a super power when it comes to athletic movement.
