South Florida Sun Sentinel published an op-ed attributed to Suffolk's Florida East Coast General Manager Tom Thrasher highlighting the need to attract more young people into trade careers to address the construction labor shortage. In the op-ed, Tom discusses the benefits of pursuing careers in the trades (i.e. diverse career paths, competitive salaries and attractive benefits) and ways vocational schools can recruit and train the next generation of workers. The op-ed also mentions Suffolk’s use of AI, robotics and data to make jobsites safer and more efficient; our strong partnerships with nonprofits that help attract young talent to construction (i.e. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County); and our commitment to the Million Women in Construction pledge to increase the number of women in our industry.

We're thrilled to highlight recent progress we’ve made on an underground building for one of our top campus clients. Believe it or not, this historic project was previously designed to house a linear accelerator and has been in the works for over 20 years!    As we transform this underutilized space into a cutting-edge lab and office workspace, one of the main objectives is to mimic outside lighting to provide a feeling of being above ground for the end-users who will be working down there each day.    From navigating confined spaces to operating a bridge crane, working below ground can complicate things from a safety perspective; but luckily, we've got just the crew! Our Safety Team Jerry Pfefferkorn, Cesar Carrillo, and Duncan McAndrews, MS-OSH, CHST have trained our field staff on specific confined space protocols and bridge crane operation so they can transport materials deep underground and our teams can safely get to work!   Phase 1 is in full swing and we’re prepping for phase 2, which will be the most dramatic change to the space. I’ve had productive day out of the office today. I’ve had the pleasure of visiting clients in Weston super mare to discuss site improvement projects and then moved on to viewing sites for a new grounds maintenance tender in Bristol. One thought from today and that I’m sure that most bidders will agree with- The real insight to any grounds maintenance tender comes from getting out on the ground to assess the sites firsthand. Site visits allow us to: •Identify key maintenance challenges •Assess access, terrain, and existing infrastructure •Ask the right questions to tailor a competitive bid Every site is different, so a hands on approach to ensure we’re offering solutions to the maintenance of the clients outdoor spaces is critical to a successful bid. #groundsmaintenance #tenders #onsite

This is a great representation of why I don’t badmouth competitors. They’re made up of people. Beautiful, messy, wonderful, purpose-driven people. In this example: The JE Dunn Construction Superintendent on our Wichita Biomedical Campus joint venture project organized a prayer circle at the jobsite. We prayed for the project, the neighborhood, and the people who will teach and learn and work in the finished building. While JE Dunn is a partner on this project, they’re a competitor on many others. One of many competitor architecture, construction, facility services, energy services and real estate development firms. In fact, the more ways we serve clients at Hutton, the more competitors we accumulate! At the heart of those firms are people with pretty much all the same hopes and dreams: To provide for themselves and their families, to find purpose in their work, to connect with others. Each one has a story that very likely involves everything from joy and triumph to grief and tragedy. And sometimes we’re lucky enough to get to know each other on a deeper level and I’m *always* grateful when I do. Like Tim at JE Dunn and all the others from Dunn who were there with me and my Hutton colleagues and many of our families — to pray together.
