Gut microbiome immaturity and childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia https://lnkd.in/dycyXumv Nature Reviews Cancer Ioannis Peppas, Tony Ford, Caroline Furness & Mel Greaves (The Institute of Cancer Research, London) Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) is the most common cancer of childhood. Here, researchers map emerging evidence suggesting that children with ALL at the time of diagnosis may have a delayed maturation of the gut microbiome compared with healthy children. This finding may be associated with early-life epidemiological factors previously identified as risk indicators for childhood ALL, including caesarean section birth, diminished breast feeding and paucity of social contacts. The consistently observed deficiency in short-chain fatty-acid-producing bacterial taxa in children with ALL has the potential to promote dysregulated immune responses and to, ultimately, increase the risk of transformation of preleukaemic clones in response to common infectious triggers. These data endorse the concept that a microbiome deficit in early life may contribute to the development of the major subtypes of childhood ALL and encourage the notion of risk-reducing microbiome-targeted intervention in the future. #cancer #microbiome #acutelymphoblasticleukaemia #gutmicrobiome #childhood

Is cancer incidence in the US—ie, the number of newly diagnosed cases per capita per year—slowing or growing? Notably, while the incidence of certain cancers is declining,1 others are increasing in younger age groups (aged <50 years).2 These temporal patterns encompass a diversity of neoplasms and vary over time by demographic factors, including age, sex, and race and ethnicity. A more fundamental question is: are we collectively experiencing lower cancer incidence as we age than the generation of our parents?

One suggestion would be to stop interfering in birth. (Immediate clamping of the umbilical cord was routine from 1980’s until 2014 when NICE said a delay of 1 minute was enough, which it certainly isn’t, but it satisfies the cord blood charities and companies 💰 Babies lose over 1 million stem cells (building blocks for life) with early clamping, yet despite mountains of evidence showing harm, early clamping (<3 minutes) is still routine practice, with parents receiving resistance to their requests for longer delays. Early clamping interferes with mother baby dyad immediately after birth when essential hormones are in play, particularly oxytocin. Oxytocin is fundamental in carbohydrate metabolism. Suboptimal carbohydrate metabolism results in obesity and diabetes. None of this is rocket science. It’s all in plain sight.
