As Gen Xers enter their 60s, they are projected to see higher cancer rates than Boomers. Not only that, the types of cancers on the rise among Generation X are different than for Boomers, and appear in all racial and ethnic groups other than Asian or Pacific Islander men. It is suspected that this may be due to environmental changes, such as pesticides, toxic chemicals, and air pollutants. Research has also shown that obesity, increasingly sedentary lifestyles, and early cancer detection may be impacting the rising cancer rates. As we enter this next phase of cancer care, investments in cancer-prevention research will become critically important in informing how to counteract this trend.
