CemNet news From Aspdin to recycled concrete This week demonstrated more than most that the cement sector is still innovating after celebrating 200 years since Joseph Aspdin's patent for ordinary Portland cement (OPC). Refining this valuable building material has taken us to the point where Heidelberg Materials announced that it will now recycle concrete from demolition waste, creating a by-product that will be reused in cement manufacture. In future, the concrete already in the world can be recycled to supply new building materials, contributing to a more sustainable construction industry. Terex introduces 90-tph capacity pre-sorting drum screen for C&D waste Terex Recycling Systems has launched its new TSD-280 Drum Screen, which is designed for handling heavy-duty construction and industrial waste. The new drum screen aims to improve recycling operations by pre-sorting bulky materials and maintaining a steady flow of waste for further processing. The TSD-280 can handle unsorted construction and demolition (C&D) as well as commercial and industrial (C&I) waste, and is capable of separating large materials from the waste stream. This reduces the need for manual sorting and aims to improve recycler’s overall operational efficiency by preventing jams and ensuring a smoother flow of materials. Metso states that the drum screen can improve material quality by producing a more consistent size of recyclables and by reducing contamination. It may also lower labour costs by reducing the need for manual material handling. According to Kenny Hull, Product and Commercial Manager at Terex Recycling Systems, the TSD-280 can also support recycling facilities by enhancing their sustainability efforts. Kenny said: “It is an excellent choice for pre-sorting bulky construction and industrial waste, which can either be disposed of, sorted, or shredded for reintroduction into the process.” The drum screen, which can be ordered in 45, 60 and 95 tph capacities to suit companies’ waste management needs, can be used as a standalone pre-sorting solution or integrated into existing systems. Key features of the heavy-duty model include a 1.8-metre bunker feeder with high sides, a 2-m oversize conveyor, a 1.4-m undersize conveyor with impact bars, and a screening drum that incorporates a 4-wheel drive design. In a world where "new" often takes the spotlight, it's important to remember that new isn't always better. As a recycling organization, we strongly support reusing and recycling materials, and we have a great success story to share. ♻️ Just last month, Sweeep Kuusakoski Ltd offcially opened its "new" ring crusher at Sittingbourne site with UK's recycling minister, Robbie Moore, in attendance. Interestingly, this crusher didn't come straight off the assembly line – it made a journey from our Plainfield site in the USA. "We have finished installing the now refurbished ex-Plainfield, USA ring crusher, and it looks as good as new. It is chomping away through motors and transformers to liberate low carbon and resource-efficient copper from the complicated POPs impacted waste. Worth noting that like the rest of our operations on site, renewable energy powers the ring crusher," says Justin Greenaway, Commercial Manager at SWEEEP Kuusakoski. Why is this installation noteworthy? 💡 Copper is one of the most critical basic metals required to plug in our ever-expanding low carbon electrified infrastructure. Demand for copper is estimated to rise by up to 50% between now and 2040, and producing copper from ore causes 10 times more carbon emissions compared to using recycled materials. The method developed by the engineers involves recycling old cement from demolished buildings by heating it up and reactivating the compounds within it.

Did you know that expanded polystyrene (#EPS), often known as #styrofoam, is highly recyclable? The same goes for expanded polypropylene (#EPP) and expanded polyethylene (#EPE).   EPS isn’t accepted in #kerbside recycling systems but it can still be processed and turned into new products like insulation and building materials. The key is to ensure it’s clean, sorted, separated, and sent to the right #recycler — like IS Recycling Pty in #WetherillPark, NSW.   While this material can be a bulky nuisance, the fact is that it’s about 98% air! When processed, a cubic metre of EPS can be reduced to just a 20cm block, which, gathered in bulk, is a high-value #recycled commodity.   It’s great to see many councils — including #Randwick, #Shoalhaven, #Wollongong, #Lithgow, #Toowoomba, #SunshineCoast, #Monash, #Yarra, and #ByronShire — offering drop-off points for EPS #recycling.
