“Why do you need my PIN?” 💳 Just kidding, I don't need your PIN, but if we're going to work together then I need to know something about you and your hospitality business. Your why, if you will. It’s not even the specific answers to the questions per se, it's what they reveal to me, and yourself, about what you and your product is really about. 🏨 If you’re wondering why that will make a difference to how I would photograph your spaces, then let me give you an example. Years ago I was the chief photographer of a newspaper in West London and I was constantly asking reporters for more details about the story I was covering. They couldn’t understand why me knowing the backstory would make a difference to the way the photo was shot. 📷 I finally convinced them by showing them two images. One image showed the outside of a house looking warm and welcoming and the other made the house look like it had been  empty for some time. Of course, they were exactly the same house, just taken with a different photographic approach and the advantage of knowing the feeling I was going to capture. 🏚️🏡 So if we’re going to work together, remember to spare a bit of time to reveal something of your motives, dreams and visions.  This deep dive will add an extra dimension to the shoot and the resulting images will represent something that is inherently you! I have covered hundreds of events since 2012, here is 5 tips: Plan and Prepare: Before the event, discuss the client's vision and expectations. Understand the type of event, key moments, and important people to capture. Scout the venue lighting and potential photo locations. Prepare your gear, with backups for batteries and memory cards. Be Adaptable and Proactive: Events rarely go exactly as planned. Think on your feet and adjust your approach as needed. Anticipate key moments and position yourself for capturing them. Look for candid interactions and interesting background details that tell the story of the event. Master the Light: Lighting is crucial in event photography. Use natural light when possible, but be prepared to supplement with flash or bounce flash. Learn how to adjust your camera settings for various lighting conditions to achieve crisp, well-exposed photos. Capture Candid Moments: While staged photos are important, candid moments often hold the most emotional impact. Move around the event, interact with guests, and capture genuine smiles, laughter, and interactions. Compose for Impact: Don't just snap photos; compose them with intention. Use leading lines, rule of thirds, and negative space to create visually interesting compositions that draw the viewer into the scene.
