Shared some thoughts on the state of the industry and what we can do to make sure it's sustainable. Thank you to André Chumko at The Post and 818. In recent years financial pressures, shifting entertainment preferences, and the lingering effects of the pandemic have contributed to a decline in live music attendance both here and around the world. For a sustainable and thriving music ecosystem, it is crucial that our support extends beyond the one-off tickets for international artists at arenas and stadiums. We must nurture a culture of regular attendance at shows by local artists at independent venues. These local shows and venues are the lifeblood of the music industry. They provide key opportunities for emerging artists to hone their craft and for industry professionals to develop their skills, and for people to connect over shared interests. Without these foundational experiences, we cannot sustain an industry capable of supporting the larger shows and festivals or developing the talented artists of Aotearoa. Full piece below!

A few days left to fill out the Fair MusE survey 👇 🎵 🎧 : Dear music creators, performers and music industry experts, We invite you to be part of a significant undertaking – our survey as part of Fair MusE. This project, funded by the European Union's Horizon Europe, delves into the intricate landscape of ‘fairness’ in the European music ecosystem. The survey aims to explore how music creators, performers and music industry experts perceive and address ‘fairness’. Your perspectives are crucial as today there is an increasing policy interest to ensure that the European music ecosystem is ‘fair’ in a platform-based economy. As such, it’s worthwhile to ask what ‘fair’ actually is and identify what cannot be considered ‘fair’ for you. How can you contribute?  Filling out the survey will take approximately 8-10 minutes. The survey is available in English, French, German, Italian, Greek, and Spanish. Your input will be crucial in shaping the Fair MusE comprehensive report on understandings and perspectives towards ‘fairness’. Please feel free to share the survey link to your music contacts. A Video Follow Up To My #PerFORM Music Incubator Post. (I prefer Videos To Photos) Also during the programme we got to do other Events formats like - Club Appearences - Music Listening Sessions - Music Release Parties - Festivals ( Blankets&Wine + ShokeShoke Fest ft Ayra Starr ) - Special Events like The King's Visit and Meet Up With The Creative Community. In all these one of the Key Take Aways was making sure you have the right room for your event and importance of a data driven decision-making. For example when doing a Music Listening Session , The People In The Room Should Constitue A Gathering That Will Lead Give Insights For A Successful Release , And When You Get To The Release Party/Event The Room Should Give Your Project A Well Deserved Take Off. The Club Appearences Are Just But A Pointer Of How The Music Reception Is Coming Along And A First Hand In Person Audience/Consumer Insight. I will later do a follow post on matters Festivals and Huge Concerts.

Over the next few months, I'm going to be posting a lot about the vital role "Seed Music" plays in the hospitality sector, providing venues with huge opportunities in driving footfall, dwell time & spend per head - so if you dislike music 🎶 & hospitality 🍻 now is your opportunity to change the channel. What is the ‘seed’ music industry? "Seed Music" refers to the stage before grassroots, which is live music in hospitality venues. Seed Music 🫘 Vs. Grassroots 🌱 🎫 When people reference the live music industry, they are typically referring to ticketed gigs, events and festivals. 🎺 By "Seed Music" we’re talking about DJs, bands and soloists playing music in venues such as pubs, restaurants, bars and clubs. 📈 While this sub-section of the live music industry has by far the highest number of participating artists and venues, it has previously been unreported on in the UK. With local small music venues under constant threat of closure, and orchestral musicians being sacked daily while shiny new national megadomes are being built, no one’s really talking about the musician’s experience of small venue versus large.. not to mention the massive topic of how music sounds in different spaces. Small venues are not just grassroots launch pads for bands starting out. While they do fulfill that purpose, they also provide an intimate performance and audience experience far more suited to the quieter genres of music. Having performed in megadomes around the world I can tell you it’s often pretty soulless and harder to connect with the audience. Not every musician wants, or needs, to be thrashing through a massive pop-rock set with strobe lightshow. Sometimes you just want to be in a space with people you can connect with to make music. Smaller spaces give the musician the chance to do just that and some of the bigger artists I tour with are now choosing smaller spaces over large. I support Music Venue Trust and Mark Davyd in their pro-active and logical approach to making venues work together to ensure that the British music industry can continue to thrive and grow and be accommodated at all levels.
