It's great to see these discussions taking place. Many say 'we couldn't possibly', very quickly forgetting the 'Eat out to help out' VAT scheme for restaurants during Covid. Unfortunately, we are stuck with a flaccid, lazy Government and one real solution is to get rid of them and have the discussion with the incoming replacements... if only we had that option. The margin between loss, break-even and profit can be as simple as 2 additional ticket sales who also buy a couple of drinks but every little bit of help will make a massive difference. We built Studio Se7en based on a business plan from data gathered between 2019 and 2022 and since then Quantitative Tightening and the costs of living crisis has meant that everyone has much less disposable income. This is a massive factor which isn't getting mentioned in the press. Massive corporations and financial institutions are syphoning money out of the system. The rich are getting Richer and the poverty line is rising for many.
Data supports that attendance at grassroots music venues has been at an all time high over the last year or so. The demand from communities is there, and venues are going above and beyond to get people in each week, but the goalposts to stay in business keep moving. That's why we fight on a few different fronts - a VAT cut on tickets being just one of them. At Sound NSW, we're committed to creating a vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable music industry. The NSW Contemporary Music Strategy is built on three strategic pillars designed to empower our industry and communities: 1️⃣ Building a better, more viable music industry: this includes prioritising and protecting First Nations music, strengthening the live and recorded music ecosystem, future-proofing the industry through upskilling and collaboration, and improving industry capacity, diversity and safety standards. 2️⃣ Growing audiences for NSW music: this includes championing NSW music, building insights and knowledge, and expanding international markets. 3️⃣ Strengthening our communities with music: this includes supporting music communities including regional NSW. Together, these pillars represent a bold step forward for our music industry, building a future that supports both creativity and sustainability. Big news for the UK’s live music scene! 🎶 The Creative Industries Minister has called for a voluntary ticket levy on stadium and arena events to provide vital support for grassroots music venues, which are the backbone of our £6.7 billion music industry. 👏 At GigPig, we believe in the value of grassroots music and its role in sustaining local economies, nurturing talent, and keeping live music alive. This is why we support this move to keep the creative pipeline thriving and maintain a strong music ecosystem. 🐽 The relentless campaigning by Music Venue Trust has made this historic move possible. They’ve called it “the single most significant shift in the UK music industry in over 50 years.” ✨ This comes at a crucial time for grassroots venues, as the sector faces rising challenges - including 125 closures last year and increased business rates looming in April. What’s your take on the ticket levy proposal? Share your thoughts in the comments below. 👇 #LiveMusic #GrassrootsVenues #MusicIndustry #Sustainability https://soamp.li/m5ni
