#FEMA National Preparedness Report 2023. Several actionable opportunities stand out from this report. #1 The need to improve personal preparedness. Only 45% of surveyed adults stated they were prepared for disaster. Children rely on their caregivers to prepare for disaster. #2 State, Local, Tribal, and Territories (SLTT) are expected to conduct FEMA's Integrating the Needs of Children Workshops in their communities. The training program developed by FEMA in 2021, is basically a local emergency manager-led community training promoting integration of children’s needs during emergencies. Report: https://lnkd.in/eHFRnKCf Integrating the Needs of Children Workshop Materials: https://lnkd.in/ez_kuFDZ. If your community has implemented one or more of these local OEM workshops, I would like to hear from you.

We are delighted to see Thriving Queensland Kids Partnership release their Thriving Kids in Disasters Phase 1 report. This report is the result of a statewide stakeholder engagement process, and review of current child wellbeing and resilience knowledge in Queensland’s current disaster arrangements. Our Community Recovery Services team were one of the partners who provided insight and understanding to develop this important report, which highlights a series of principles and recommendations on how to best gear systems to support the needs of kids in disasters. Living in Australia’s most disaster-prone state, Queenslanders are no strangers to adverse weather events and the lasting impacts they can have on kids. By implementing these recommendations, we can reduce the threats that disasters bring and ensure healthy developmental environments for kids. 🌍 Our story began during the pandemic when everyone’s lives paused and our world changed. We worked for a disaster relief program, funded by FEMA grants, that aimed to provide temporary relief services to the public. However, we soon realized that the needs of our communities extended beyond the capabilities of a temporary program. Crisis happens every day, and even those who aren't in crisis still need help. That's why we decided to launch Communities Voices, a platform where we can work together with other peers and existing community organizations to overcome challenges more efficiently. As peers ourselves, we understand what it's like to have an "invisible" disability and to need help without knowing where to turn. We've navigated the systems in our communities and found many amazing organizations that help in different ways. Our goal is to build connections and improve our communities' well-being. Join us on this journey to make a difference. Together, we can create a stronger and more supportive community. 💙 For more information about our initiatives and how you can get involved, please check the first comment. #CommunitySupport #EmotionalWellbeing #PandemicRelief #SupportingCommunities #communitiesvoices #Iamapeer #peerlife #whatsyourstory

In the event I am unavailable, i can only convey a mitigating proposition pertaining to those members of society with special accessibility considerations or with mobility vulnerabilities would be to incorporate a transportation solution that would be community specific. What I mean by this solution is to allow for charter buses or City operated buses to be allocated to affected communities and allow for vulnerable persons (registered) to be picked up when no immediate family or when living outside of a senior retirement home. During a crisis, these vulnerable persons are typically the most affected by the inability to evacuate so, a dedicated bus service would play a huge role in avoiding loss of life. I would still push for allocated buses to transport vulnerable persons from retirement homes but also allow for private residence pickups as well. Thoughts ?
We hope you can join us next Tuesday, May 7, for our Emergency Preparedness Week kick-off event! Jen McEachen of JLM Disaster Resiliency and Accessibility Consulting will join us on Zoom at 5pm MT/7pm ET for "Emergency Preparedness for Everyone: Accessibility Considerations." This free event will identify and discuss how how we can address and overcome barriers to emergency preparedness for people within the disability community. You don't want to miss this one! --Pioneering Female District Emergency Officer | Building Resilient Communities through Strategic Training & Leadership"
💡Transforming Communities through Emergency Preparedness💡 Emergency services training could serve as a catalyst for community transformation? Over the years, establishing 60 Community Emergency Response Centers in flood-prone areas and launching a comprehensive Fire Safety Campaign in congested marketplaces have taught me a fundamental truth – preparedness goes beyond the immediate response. Key lessons learned: Proactive community involvement is critical in disaster risk reduction. Education and sensitization are as crucial as the emergency response. Sustainable safety measures can turn vulnerable communities into resilient ones. These initiatives not only mitigate risks but also empower communities, making them active participants in their safety. It's a testament to how integrated approaches in emergency services can lead to broader societal benefits. What innovative approaches have you come across that bolster community resilience? #CommunityPreparedness #DisasterRiskReduction #SafetyFirst #SustainableDevelopment
