Good work Samuel Austin and Climate Council presenting this Heat Island video then introducing the concept of urban heat continents. Excellent discussion Emma Bacon as well. Fit for Purpose is definitely a discussion we need more of. While there's a constant conversation about future developments there's millions of homes that can reduce the heat load on roofs and walls right now. While lighter roofs definitely reduce the heat transfer into the home as it reflects sunlight...the real ability to block infrared will transfer roofs into net zero thermal absorbers and then the traditional insulation can further manage the internal temperatures both in summer and winter while not having to deal with the extreme heat load from the roof and wall. White heat reflective paints try to reflect the visible spectrum of sunlight while clean (44%). Blocking the infrared radiation (53%) is critical to the full success of a cool roof insulation coating. Most can’t do this so rely on relative results from SRI and being as white as possible. It is crucial we address the heat island effect as the climate changes. Not mentioned in this video are synthetic sports fields which become hotter than bitumen on sunny days. In 2022 I recorded a temperature of 91 degrees Celsius using a laser thermometer on a synthetic field near my home. It’s time to consider heat effects in our urban, landscape, and housing design and regulations.

By 2050, Sydney's climate is going to be like Grafton in northern NSW. So how do we prepare for the added heat and humidity? First, we heat map our city!
