And gives everyone a reminder to Stay Healthy by Exercise, Diet & if already having Diabetes - to Manage it well, adhering to medication (as advised by your Dr)/ compliance, sleeping well, managing stress & focussing on exercise & healthy diet. Though - World Diabetes Day (WDD) was created in 1991 by IDF and the World Health Organization in response to growing concerns about the escalating health threat posed by diabetes. World Diabetes Day became an official United Nations Day in 2006. It's (WDD) another reminder for all of us, saying, "Let's manage Diabetes well & avoid complications. And in the first place prevent it, by healthy lifestyle modifications." I haven't had a chance to post til now, but this was such great news this week. Finally, our peak body for diabetes in Australia has endorsed a lower carbohydrate eating approach - providing hope to people living with type 2 diabetes. This has been such a long time coming and will mean that people seeking to improve their blood glucose levels and general health should now be given all of the dietary options available from their healthcare providers. Until now, many health professionals, including dietitians have generally been advising people with type 2 diabetes to eat in a way that focuses on weight loss through calorie restriction or eating as per the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating. As the research will support, calorie-restrictive diets are rarely sustainable, and the guidelines are generally heavily focused on a higher intake of carbohydrates. While it can be helpful for some, it’s not necessarily dealing with the root cause – being an issue of glucose metabolism, not someone’s weight. For many people living with any type of diabetes, eating a higher carbohydrate diet often results in difficulty in managing their blood glucose levels. Why? Because out of all the different foods we eat, carbohydrates (whether they are better quality or otherwise) have the greatest impact on blood glucose. Eating less carbohydrates, in whatever way that looks like for someone, will make a big difference in improving blood glucose levels. This new partnership and endorsement of lower carbohydrate eating means that people will have a choice in how they want to manage their diabetes through food (a super important factor in self-management of a chronic condition). Importantly, those who want to use this approach should now be able to get support to do so much more easily. Hopefully, it also paves the way for increasing the evidence and improving the national guidelines soon to provide support for people living with type 1 diabetes who choose to eat this way too.
