I feel lost in this debate. The recent announcement by the Ontario government is worrying for anyone who cares about safe, sustainable urban transportation. How can this be framed as a traffic congestion issue? By separating cyclists from cars, we reduce the unpredictability that drivers face, making the road safer and smoother for both groups. Cyclists get the dedicated space they need to ride confidently, while drivers no longer have to constantly watch for cyclists darting in and out of their lane. What’s more, adding bike lanes can actually help reduce traffic. When families and commuters feel safer biking, especially for short trips, we’ll see fewer cars on the road. Picture more kids biking to school, people using bikes for daily errands—less traffic, fewer emissions, and a better overall experience for everyone. It feels like we’re focusing on the wrong issue here. The real conversation shouldn’t be about losing a couple of car lanes, but about how we can design streets that accommodate both cyclists and drivers.
