Mobility As A Service (MAAS) is where we need to go and that includes Hull.

Innovate UK Business Connect is supporting Tayside & Central Scotland Transport Partnership (Tactran) and South East of Scotland Transport Partnership (SEStran) to assist them in finding innovative solution providers to develop a new platform for their current Mobility as a Service (MaaS) journey planning interfaces (apps and websites), putting all potential users at the heart of the solution. The solution provider should offer innovative recommendations to improve functionality of the tech solution which aims to deliver the objectives of the Tactran and SEStran MaaS programme of: 👉 Encouraging car drivers to use sustainable modes (Modal shift) Helping non car owners to be aware of and navigate multi-modal travel options to access jobs, education and services (Reduce inequalities) 👉 Enabling people with mobility difficulties to navigate our transport networks (Reduce inequalities) To this end, the new platform will need to deploy such implementation whilst retaining the functionality of the current platform to ensure a smooth and fast transition for users. Way back in 1980s when I was helping transport companies to design new technologies for scheduling, real time information, ticketing etc I had a vision of truly integrated services. This was way before smartphones, social media, smartcards etc. People want a simple process like in Switzerland where you have been able to plan, pay, use multi modal services for over 100 years. In 2003 I created Multi Modal Transport Solutions Ltd to look at making this dream become reality. The reality of the dream is somewhat different. It soon became apparent that no matter what technology we invent unless we can get all operators to work together delivering quality, reliable, affordable services you cannot achieve your aims. Move forward 21 years and MaaS is seen as the magic bullet. Again the focus is on technologies. Yet the same issues still exist. In Scotland the situation is worse than 21 years ago. We need to understand that the public want reliable, safe, affordable, integrated services 7 days a week. Bus services are less frequent and reliable due to impact of Covid, home working, driver shortages, engineering issues and cuts in public service budgets. The hype around the success of apps to inform passengers has to be measured against the reality of what is happening on the ground. Many real-time information systems are only showing the scheduled times instead of actual performance. In some areas you have as much chance of winning the lottery as a bus running on time. The public are not stupid however, why do we need so many different systems each with their own user requirements? Keep things simple. Technologies are only tools to supposedly make public transport more attractive to use. You cannot ignore the fact that at this time we cannot get the basics right. No MaaS provider can afford to take on the costs associated with customers using their platform when they know they will face a deluge in complaints from passengers wanting refunds etc that will need to be taken up with operators due to poor performance. At this time we should sort out the issues surrounding why public transport is in a mess. Funding should be used in the first place to get the market stable before we look at how MaaS and technologies can grow the market. At present everyone is doing their own thing without understanding how bad the situation is for users. Operators need stability to invest. Again the only certainty in the UK at this time is uncertainty. Skill shortages at local authorities also impacts on infrastructure and information. There is a crisis for sure. We need to start working together otherwise the MaaS dream with remain just that and the public will not switch to public transport. We have the technology, business models. However, can we work together to deliver what the public really want? Only time will tell. Together we can build a better world 🌎

Where would we be without Wifi on trains? At least, that’s a question some regular travellers might ask - others might wish for better, more reliable internet on trains. Or simply not care. Last year, research found that almost 100% of 12-year-olds had mobile phones - so connectability is important to teens, especially on the move. During our recent work with London North Eastern Railway, we hosted a 150-strong SuperSquad of 13 to 18-year-olds - helping them bring young people to the forefront of rail travel. Within six weeks, our Squad produced over 1,500 ideas to help LNER make rail travel more accessible - and one winning idea was Connor’s, regarding tiered Wifi pricing. The idea is that people pay for what Wifi they want - if at all, introducing a tiered ticketing system. A fellow Squad member described this idea as “making the onboard experience more attractive to young people by having fully functioning superfast wifi, streaming services and gaming access.” Huge thanks to James Downey for his thoughtful perspective on Connor's idea!
