HR Pan India Residential Vertical @Jones Lang LaSalle Incorporated | Expert in Manpower Scouting & Talent Management | Advocate for Culture & Hiring Practices.
2 years ago, our company embarked on a journey to enhance workplace diversity and inclusion. As the HR lead, I learned valuable lessons on making D&I a lived experience, not just a policy on paper. Inclusive Hiring Practices: We revamped our recruitment process to welcome a more diverse talent pool. This meant going beyond traditional recruitment channels. Regular D&I Training and Workshops: Organized workshops focusing on unconscious bias, cultural competence, and inclusivity. These sessions were eye-openers, challenging us to think and act more inclusively. Celebrating Diversity: We started celebrating various cultural events, embracing the rich tapestry of our workforce. This initiative brought teams closer, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of different cultures. The Outcome: Improved team collaboration, innovation, and a sense of belonging among employees. Our diversity efforts positively impacted our brand and customer relations. This journey taught me that true diversity and inclusion mean creating a workplace where differences are celebrated, and everyone feels they belong. #journey #diversity #workplace #culture Follow Rajsree Sehanobis for more such content.

This is a topic that has been largely ignored not only in our family which has had more and more of the younger generations impacted but also at companies that I work with. I think in religious families the topic is one that people are afraid to have conversations about for fear of saying something wrong or even just not understanding what is going on, or fear of loss or further division. Those conversations are the ones that could help bring peace and help to the ones that need it. In the workplace it is often the same; HR tends to stereotype the religious belief’s a person has and they expect certain faiths to prove that they are religious before getting an exclusion from corporate inclusion events. They do this because they weigh the risk of legal action based on those stereotypes which violates religious freedom and personal choice. This type of discrimination tends to create a negative workspace and does the opposite of creating unity. The better way to deal with this is to create an open discussion. It’s important to understand that both sides are coming at this from a very charged and defensive stance and you need to create a space where people can speak and listen. Your team culture is worth more than appearing to be on point with everyone else. Your team deserves to be an example of how to work and respect each others beliefs while crushing your company goals!

When we talk about fostering an inclusive work culture we often take workforce sensitization bit lightly. Consider this example - when we are talking about hiring neurodiverse workforce, how many of our current employees are aware of challenges such people face in their day to day life? Workforce sensitization fosters inclusive workplace cultures through education on diversity, equity, and inclusion. It promotes empathy, respect, and understanding among employees, driving creativity and collaboration. In sum, before hiring for diversity, ask yourself, are we diversity-ready ?
