Reflection on my journey as a Public Relations first year student. My journey as a first year student at the University of Johannesburg was not exactly smooth as I struggled with registration and funding but besides those minor obstacles, my journey has been a lovely one. From experiencing a new place to meeting new people, it's safe to say that UJ became home away from home. As a Public Relations student, at first I didn't even know what Public Relations is and which careers I could pursue. Seeing people look down on the qualification and saying that there are no job opportunities made me have second thoughts, I felt like dropping out at one point but as I went on in the course Public Relations taught me a lot of things such as team work, time management, that critical thinking skills and problem solving skills are crucial, networking and building relationships, feedback and criticism fosters growth. I have gained core skills namely; communication, strategic planning, writing, crisis management and research. Learning about the effectiveness of communication and how a message may be misinterpreted if effective communication was not met, was an eye opener for me. For me Public Relations was just about maintaining a good reputation for an organization but I learnt more than that including PR techniques, functions, business structures, the business environment; PESTLE factors and SWOT analysis. My first year totally changed how I used to view PR in a more positive manner, I now know that there's more to Public Relations than just maintaining a good reputation for an organization but it is also about building mutually beneficial relationships with the publics. There's a number of careers found in Public Relations and Communication: 1.Marketing Communication Specialist 2.Social Media Manager 3.Crisis Communications Manager 4.Event Planner 5.Speechwriter 6.Public Relations Specialist 7. Reputation Management Specialist I look forward to gain more knowledge and experience as I continue to embark on my academic journey with Public Relations.

As 2024 gradually comes to an end, I would like to take a moment to reflect on the major events that have occurred in my life this year and express my gratitude to those who have played a significant role in my journey. - I began service at my PPA in January and completed the entire NYSC program in October. I have never been happier; it felt like a burden was lifted from my shoulders! 😅 - In March, I joined YD Company as a PR intern to learn about the PR landscape, particularly its role in the event planning industry. I am now a PR Associate! A big shoutout to my team leads, MaryAnn Godfrey and Bankole Oluwatomiwa ANIPR, as well as my fellow team members, who have been instrumental in my growth within the company. - I want to give a special thanks to my boss, Dr. Yetty Ogunnubi CIM MCIM, who has consistently looked out for my development and has supported and mentored me throughout my journey with YD and beyond. - As part of the Public Relations team at YD, I had the opportunity to work on several exciting events, including The Lagos Leather Fair, Hive by Providus by ProvidusBank, the Science of Trade Conference, Global Tech Africa, the Africa Creative Market Global, and the Arivla Asoebi Party & Fashion Show. - This year, I finally completed my Google Project Management Professional Certificate. I can hardly believe it took me over a year to finish that learning path! 😂 Motivated by this achievement, I immediately enrolled in and completed the Digital Marketing Professional Certificate from Google. - I also participated in Cohort 6.0 of the Online Digital Marketing Boot Camp by DigifyNG, where I learned more about digital marketing and gained practical experience. Additionally, I was nominated to represent my cohort in the Young Laifer Award Competition, where Elizabeth Ibeh and I collaborated to tackle a live brief in less than three hours. A big shoutout to Florence Olubunmi Olumodimu, MBA, RTE, PMP, our Programs Manager, for all her effort and support to help us grow and reach the finish line in the boot camp. It was not easy! I would describe it as a long marathon with many hurdles! - To top it all off, I had the amazing opportunity to work with Queen Aderonke as a PR Associate and Assistant Show Producer for her program, Africa Fashion Week Nigeria 2024. In this role, I played a vital part in onboarding media partners and collaborating with the show producer to ensure the event ran smoothly. 2024 has challenged me beyond my capabilities, and I felt overwhelmed several times. Nevertheless, I have learned many valuable lessons, and I am excited and eager for what 2025 has in store! Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Wonderful New Year in advance! #MerryChristmas #HappyNewYear ___ Video Caption: representing my Boss, Dr. Yetty Ogunnubi, to receive the Award for Female Entrepreneur of the Year at the Global Entrepreneur Festival 2024.
