Kaspersky and AFRIPOL have signed a significant cooperation agreement aimed at strengthening efforts to combat cybercrime across Africa. The five-year agreement focuses on enhancing data exchange on cyber threats and trends, enabling both organizations to share valuable intelligence on emerging cybercriminal activities. This collaboration marks a critical step forward in addressing the evolving landscape of cyber threats on the continent, particularly as Africa has become increasingly vulnerable to industrial cyberattacks. Under the agreement, Kaspersky will provide AFRIPOL with detailed threat intelligence data, which will be used for criminal intelligence analysis to better understand and respond to cybercrime. Additionally, Kaspersky will offer technical assistance and expertise in information security, drawing on its experienced teams to support AFRIPOL in enhancing its operational capacity. The signing ceremony took place on November 18 at AFRIPOL’s headquarters in Algiers, where Eugene Kaspersky, founder and CEO of Kaspersky, and Ambassador Jalel Chelba, Acting Executive Director of AFRIPOL, formalized the partnership. Eugene Kaspersky emphasized that collaboration is essential in the fight against cybercrime, stressing that the shared knowledge and resources between Kaspersky and AFRIPOL will empower both organizations to tackle cyber threats more effectively. This partnership aims to create a safer cyberspace for all, strengthening Africa’s digital resilience and ensuring better protection for its citizens and businesses against evolving cyber risks. This agreement builds on a strong history of cooperation between Kaspersky and AFRIPOL, which have worked together on various initiatives, including the Africa Cyber Surge Operations. South Africa hit by cyber extortion attacks. Africa, and specifically South Africa, saw a significant increase in cyber extortion — more commonly known as ransomware — attacks between Q2 2023 and Q1 2024. This is according to Cyberdefense senior security researcher Wicus Ross, who said South Africa’s victim count increased by 107% over the period. “For the period analysed, Africa saw the second-highest increase globally as a percentage,” said Ross. He added that attackers may think businesses in Africa’s finance and insurance sectors are likely better positioned to pay their demands. Regarding vulnerability, small and medium businesses in South Africa are likely the most vulnerable to cybercrime, and Ross says businesses will require strong controls in place to protect themselves.
