Showcasing a National Treasure with the Great Rivers National Park Alton could be a city where the Mississippi River is seen for what it truly is: a national treasure. Where Alton is a go-to family-friendly outdoor recreation for the entire Midwest. Where the riverfront, the Clark Bridge, Marina, and the historic downtown area have the potential to attract tens of millions of dollars each year for local businesses and tax revenue. How do we get there? The Great Rivers National Park, a 144-mile designated recreation park corridor that would include 135,000 acres and be a beacon of sustainability. It may sound like a big idea and that’s because it is! A project on this scale can only be possible with local, state and national interests and partnerships, with Congress being the final decider in whether an area should be added to the National Park System or whether some other action might be appropriate. No one entity can do this alone and it won’t be a quick process. But AltonWorks believes that the potential is there. With research, collaboration, brainstorming and teamwork, the region could be significantly enhanced by combining the natural assets into one fully managed national park. We know we’re dreaming big but we believe in Alton, and we believe in the future of Alton. Follow along as we highlight steps in our long-term idea to create the Great Rivers National Park and what it might mean to the city. #AltonWorks #AltonIllinois

Chair Travel Watch South West and Get on Board, Experience transport Strategist’s and Transport advisor (rail and bus), Severnside Community Rail Partnership Director
I had a very interesting conversation with one of the UK's leading bodies in restoration and heritage and how a sustainable transport system can working together with their carbon reduction and green agendas. I will be asking them to be part of the "Get on Board" team. Their frustrations where not about the transport industry, rather than the way other organisations value the role something plays in the community. This value can be through bringing people into a given area and enabling growth as well as reducing the expenditure on accidents and repairs on our road network as well as decreasing the carbon output. I would like to understand from other such organisations how a improved or reopened railway can benefit the area, your business, the communities it serves, as well as less obvious awards of less traffic on our roads, which creates potentially less expenditure. The role of an "influencer" comes in various shapes and organisations and bringing your on board will widen the message on the benefits of railway when it comes to improving lives. If you are are organization that will benefit from the railway reopening in your community then I would like to hear from you, and i have listed some of the towns and communities that are on the list for reopening: 1. Tavistock - Devon and Dartmoor 2. Cullompton - Devon East & West 3. Wellington - Somerset 4. Ivanhoe Line - Leicester to Burton on Trent via Coalville and National Forest 5. Barrow Hill Line - Chesterfield to Sheffield via Barrow Hill and Wavertree 6. Don Valley - Sheffield to Stocksbridge 7. Ferryhill new station between Middlesborough and Durham 8. Haxby new station between York and Malton 9. Meir new station between Stoke on Trent and Uttoxeter 10. Stoke on Trent to Leek reopening 11. Gobowen to Oswestry All these stations and lines run near or close to large national parks, historic houses and monuments, open countryside and major tourist attractions, to name a few Dartmoor National Park, Killerton House, Wellington Monument, Alton Towers, Potteries, Canals, National Forest and so on. I would like to hear from you and welcome you to join the voice and strengthen the message about re-connecting communities really means. Access to the countryside and green spaces in Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire are a huge advantage ⬇️ The make-up of Stoke-on-Trent's six towns mean that it's easy to "get out" and into the countryside 🚶♂️ Staffordshire is a big county and very green with an area of AONB right in the middle, Cannock Chase and the Peak District in the north🌳 In a world where people want: - a long walk over a pub crawl - a garden instead of a balcony - clean air instead of the sound of sirens - early mornings over late nights What has long felt like Stoke and Staffordshire's disadvantage could fast become a huge advantage. Someone may need to correct me on this, but I think Stoke-on-Trent is the best city in the country for access to green space. And Staffordshire's size, gorgeous canal and market towns play to the growing desire of "run and coffee is the new pub and pint" trend 🏃♂️ That's why I paid particular attention this week when I saw that Staffordshire County Council has committed to invest £18m across Cannock Chase, Chasewater and the 92 mile Staffordshire Way. As well as Cannock Chase District Council bringing two new trails to life. AND Enjoy Staffordshire receiving £300k to drive more people to Staffordshire Moorlands. In general, I believe we need to focus on what we have, not what we don't. Don't try and turn Stoke into Manchester. Our geography is unique, leverage that.
