I hosted a successful satellite event at Permissionless! Here’s what I learned from it 👇 1. Smaller, Intimate Events Are a Win People seem to prefer environments where they don’t have to yell to be heard. Smaller events allow for more meaningful conversations and even give space for an open mic session. Something that really elevates the interaction level. 2. Hosting Isn’t Glamorous As the host, you become the center of attention, but you can’t always control who you end up talking to. While it’s great to be the person everyone wants to connect with, not every conversation will go in your favor. 3. Defi, Gaming, and VCs in the Room The event was filled with DeFi enthusiasts and some gaming professionals. Plus, VCs were definitely in attendance, which created an interesting mix of conversations around the future of these sectors. What are your thoughts on intimate events vs large scale?

The hat for this year's #gamescom nothing too visible, but change of style comes in line with a couple of first timers this year. 1. 🪅 Meettomatch schedule fully booked, no single slot left >> I messed it up and didn't even reserve a slot for the obligatory walk through the halls. I hope to find some time Friday. 2. 🏘️ We have our own meeting room as Kickstarter at medianet berlinbrandenburg e.V. joint booth in Hall 4.1, come by and say hello! >> I typically prefer to go to other people's booths as I can then see how they present themselves, I bump into people on the way, can scout for interesting companies in-between the rush from one meeting to the next. Let's see how this turns out. 3. 🐝 Taking some meetings for Honig Studios - digital production studio for the first time as I am helping them in the publishing team for #TheLostGlitches >> a new hat in the pack. 4. 🪐 Staying until Saturday, as we had the hotel booked a night longer than usual >> still have a full day on the show grounds and ready for #game500 5. 🇩🇪 No Opening Night Live, no political opening, no #branchenparty for me this year. That's a change I am most curious about as I always appreciated the work game – Verband der deutschen Games-Branche e.V. does for their members at gamescom. >> focussing on events downtown and trying to get some rest in order to survive until Saturday. 6. 📇 No business cards! In my networking classes I feature the added value of physical data exchange, but I am not leading by example anymore. Didn't print new ones for years and simply ran out. >> LinkedIn to the rescue. Hope my extra battery packs will keep the phone alive! But I am sure I will miss the rituals of exchanging cards. 🥳🤠🕹️ All of this said: looking forward to the party!

Turning Challenges into Triumphs: Our Latest Board Gaming Night Last night, we hosted a much-anticipated Board Gaming Night, but it didn’t go exactly as planned. While we always aim for smooth events, this time we faced three unexpected hurdles: 1️⃣ The venue had loud music, making communication a challenge. 2️⃣ Dim lighting made it harder to set up and read game cards. 3️⃣ It was overcrowded, which left us short on space. Despite these hurdles, the spirit of our amazing participants made the night unforgettable! ✨ How we managed: • We quickly improvised by moving to a quieter corner of the venue, ensuring everyone could enjoy the games better. • Participants used flashlights and phone lights to brighten up the space and keep the energy alive. • Everyone showed incredible teamwork and adjusted to the tight setup, turning what could have been a setback into a fun, cozy vibe. The night reminded us that it’s not always about perfection but about creating memories, adapting together, and having fun no matter what! To everyone who attended: thank you for your patience, enthusiasm, and cooperation. Your energy transformed the night into a success. In the games business it is sometimes all too easy to become inwardly focused...we are after all, an exciting, evolving industry with highs & lows aplenty... To do that to the exclusion of all else however is foolhardy. There is a whole world of innovation out there, particularly the broader world of "tech". Whether we take inspiration from new business models or utilise emerging technologies, there is value in looking further afield. Equally....there are major misconceptions about gaming from the tech industry leaders I speak to. A little knowledge can be a dangerous thing, and not getting the right advice can lead to spurious conclusions & expensive failures (Google Stadia anyone?) Lets be clear GAMING IS NOT A SUBSET OF TECH It is a highly *creative* endeavour, with a clear focus on *fun* for the consumer This means both the makers & consumers of the product have a very different mindset those who'd build a more general tech-based business. The issues are not insurmountable though...tech and gaming may not be siblings, but they are cousins. With the right advice on market dynamics, opportunity identification and strategic execution, tech companies CAN win in the gaming world. They just need the right guide. I'll be at London Tech week.
