I grew up in a family business in housing construction; I saw it way back then that the construction business was heading for a fall. I believe standards are essential to building in the Canadian climate. Still, as early as 1970, it wasn't only standards but bylaws and practices that would ultimately discourage the young from having a construction career, my young self included. I went on into technology, yet I had 13 years of experience in construction and housing. Canada has done this to itself by discouraging the young from trade. I look back now and think that at this crossroads, I should get back into construction, but the business network has also changed to devalue the experience and knowledge of the older worker. We are disregarded, and even though companies are not willing to admit they do this, they seek younger employees over those over 50. And yet, most of Canada has highly skilled workers, over 50. The day of reckoning will come shortly when skilled workers will be gone in Canada; who will take up the jobs then? What comes to mind is "You reap what you sow."
