THE MOST RESILIENT of #founders out there? This one in #biotech using #AI for #drugsiscovery. Meet Tim Guilliams and team have learned to harness resilience tools both mental, physiological and medical to maintain health in body and mind and team when facing extremes. The mission is not over for @healx but this a bacon of hope for the biotech startup ecosystem. Together with LabGenius and their round of late the promise is coming back to life. I had the pleasure of spending time with biotech legend Dr. Peter Pack one of the godfathers of monoclonal antibody discovery. Biotech is HARD, both because iterations are limited by the speed of biology, not the speed of light or commits to GitHub, and because of the limited funding paths / exit prospects. Biotech is in a dire state at the minute. Even UK biotech that plays in the big leagues of the drug discovery world despite the small population and relatively lean imvestment made here. Peter got me thinking about how hard being a biotech or techbio firm is at the best of time. Today is almost as low as 2002. We have many companies struggling to be funded despite some of them being proper ground breaking platforms for new approaches to treating and delaying disease and decline. Rt. Hon. After a Long Winter’s Nap for Recovery, Here’s My Brief Recap of JPM Week:   1.    Universal group think that sentiment has improved in the biotech sphere – it has but, it may take another 3–6 months for the bankers/VCs to start opening up their wallets again. 2.    My company, Bridge, had 32 meetings with new emerging companies which was 4X more than last year, (my sentiment has improved!). 3.    Jim Weiss’s Real Chemistry reception on Sunday evening at MOMA is always spectacular and I have a chance to see many colleagues (past & present). 4.    Biotech Showcase Wednesday Investor Panel: Maha Katabi (Sofinnova Partners Investments) was the most compelling as she cited a) less investment into cancer and more into personalized neuro, rare and gene therapy, b) Expecting companies to spend less on platform development and more on getting the lead asset to POC clinically. Many of you know I love to cook so my interpretation of that is…”stop creating new recipes and get the Michelin star dinner on the table!” 5.    On Monday morning, there were young people on street corners with “Welcome to San Francisco”. I’ve lived in the bay area for 33 years and never ever seen that – the City’s new PR campaign at work juxta positioned with the young man with a “yellow blanket” over him I saw in a store front on Market with two police officers standing by. After 36 years in the biotech world, I do think 2024 is the beginning of a new biotech bull market cycle and if so, history would suggest that may be from 3- 5 years in duration. Why is absolute rather than relative quantification important in #IVDs? Relative quantification, as is common in #proteomic and #microRNA based approaches, can overinflate small changes and minimize large ones. Let’s look at why this is the case; - Person A makes a 400% return, would you say he’s a great #investor? Actually, he’s only made £5 return on a £1 investment - Person B makes a 50% return, would you say he’s a great investor? I would, because he’s made £5M on a £10M investment. Platforms like OLink provide only relative quantification. HLI Bags $39.8m to Advance AI-driven Health Risk Analysis Platform Human Longevity, Inc. (HLI), a California-based precision medicine company, has raised $39.8M in a series B funding round to advance its AI-driven health risk insight and recommendation platform. The new capital will also allow the company to introduce new longevity-focused technologies and services. Co-founded in 2013 by Craig Venter, a genomic pioneer, and Peter Diamandis, the company leverages innovative technologies to extend human health and well-being beyond the traditional treatment approach, focusing only on treating diseases. The company’s latest round was spearheaded by TVM Capital Healthcare, with continued support from existing investors, including Emerging Technology Partners and Panacea Venture.
