Let's try this again. Last week, we didn't have any #niceguy nominations, so I'm hopeful we'll have some great ones this week to make up for it. I know we have a holiday weekend coming up here in the US, so if you have time to give a shout out before you take off for the unofficial start of summer that would be great. My #FeelGoodFriday is all about connection today. If you know me you know music is how I connect. Connection is important for lots of reasons and lots of things. I encourage all of you to take time to connect in whatever way is speaking to you as you read this. Connect with loved ones.  Connect with your values.  Connect with the way you take care of yourself.  #Connection also fuels #trust - and trust is crucial for building a strong team culture and sense of #belonging in the workplace. When we take the time to genuinely connect with our colleagues, understand their perspectives, and make space for open communication and vulnerability, that's how we cultivate the kind of trust that allows teams to thrive. So end the week connecting with someone you work with, whether it's over a shared music appreciation or just making the effort to really listen to them. Pebble Beach ended after Saturday. NASCAR Clash ran a day early. Mother Nature did not want anything on the west coast to interfere with Peyton and Eli coaching in the Pro Bowl. How relevant is what you carry outside your conclave? It is easy to look like a celebrity and a mini lords in your local gatherings. With people who are not sufficiently exposed. It’s easier for your business to dominate in your street and locale. It easier for what you offer to be celebrated, when the people celebrating, have seen nothing compared to it. The real winning is when you win even among champions, The real wining lies when in the gathering of kings, what you bring to the table is still celebrated as excellence. The real wining is Excellence even on a table rounded by Eagles. Hone your craft, reach out to people better than you, improve every tiny bit until you can stand with kings and not feel intimidated.

What is the #travelretail story? What are we REALLY selling? We are not selling gifts, self treats or restocking. We are not selling products. We are selling more than that. That is what we need to tap into. Last night I stumbled upon this video. Powerful stuff. Jeremy Renner had a bit of a run in with a snow plow leaving him with 38 broken bones, a sliced liver, an eye popped out and a popped lung. Yet, despite all odds…. He is running. For him, Brooks trainers were a symbol of hope. Hope led to a new perspective… a realisation that a change in perspective is the real superpower. Adversity is fuel. A product is a vehicle that carries intent. A bottle of whisky might be a gift but its intent can be so much more. It could be a celebration, gratitude, reconciliation or just an opportunity to share stories over a dram. A bottle of perfume can be a lift in mood, a statement, an act to attract or wanting to be part of the brand lifestyle. If retailers want to be a brand in our channel, one of luxury, it needs to tell a story…. Otherwise it is a 7-Eleven, a blurred store on the travellers journey. As for Brooks, I will certainly consider them for my next pair. A trainer is a trainer at the end of the day but, I like the values it has shared in this story. #dutyfree could do worse than borrowing their slogan… let’s run there.
