Resource extraction causes 90% of biodiversity loss and accounts for 50% of all GHG emissions. (UNEP) These are shocking numbers which, once again, highlight the severity of the consequences our current economic system is causing to our planet and society. However, not only most experts, but also many political and corporate leaders are aware of this status quo and even see a promising way out - circular economy. Therefore, realizing a truly circular economy is not necessarily a recognition problem, but an implementation problem. And this is exactly what we tackle at CIRCULAR REPUBLIC through our projects in the textile industry, recycling EV batteries, or various Masterclasses and circular economy workshops. In November, we are taking all of this a step further and I could not be more excited about it. Our CIRCULAR REPUBLIC FESTIVAL is just a little bit over a month away (November 15-18). This four-day event brings together circular economy enthusiasts from politics, industry, science, and entrepreneurship and tackles the actual IMPLEMENTATION of circular economy! Personally, I am very proud to have curated the panel on circular textiles. Where do we draw the line when it comes to acceptable corporate behaviour on climate change? Most of us agree on the urgent need to move away from a reliance on fossil fuels and invest in new technologies that drive change to a more sustainable way of life, but how do we get there and how quickly can we do it? Some practices we would all agree are no longer acceptable, but how many of us would go as far as boycotting supermarkets which sell petrol? As 'greenwashing' protests hit some of our most cherished arts events, it is a part of the climate debate that has become urgent for our cultural sector. Sustainability is one of the top concerns for business leaders, and the pressure isn't going away soon. It's a topic that comes up within our entertainment division often. Being conscious of your organisation's environmental impact is more than just an issue for mass production and transportation. It applies to all of us. Coldplay's sustainability report has proven that the entertainment industry does contribute to climate change, and they are leading by example to foster a more sustainable future for entertainment. With their huge influence and reach, there's no doubt other musicians and venues will follow suit, as well as fans more inclined to listen to the powerful key message from a much-loved band. #sustainableentertainment #entertainmentindustry #livemusic

Sustainability in action...

As Las Vegas hosts the Super Bowl today amidst much fanfare, there’s a side of the story that’s not capturing as much limelight - the event’s sustainable efforts. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the stadium will be powered by renewable energy. Beyond that, they’ve implemented comprehensive waste management measures. Given the significant environmental footprint of large sporting events – from energy and travel to food waste – initiatives like these are crucial. The NFL’s Super Bowl is on a mission to “green” its showcase event, a move discussed in depth in a fascinating article I came across. While the statistics behind the event’s sustainability challenges are indeed staggering, there’s a glimmer of hope for a more eco-friendly future for such major gatherings. This raises an important question about the communication of sustainable efforts. Are the National Football League (NFL) and its major advertisers doing enough to highlight their commitment to sustainability? Not communicating about their sustainable efforts they fall into Green hushing a major problem between corporations. 🎶 A night of music and reflection: Endorsement for Sustainability Last night I attended a concert of Ziggy Alberts. His music is always with a certain message, but one song in particular resonated with me. The intention of the song: ".. it is about learning how to be better to ourselves and the planet; truly, we need everybody to become involved, instead of pointing fingers." It got me thinking about the role that celebrities and influencers play in driving awareness and action on sustainability issues. We live in an age where the voices of public figures can have an extraordinary impact, reaching millions in an instant. It’s incredible how a single post or endorsement from someone with a large following can start conversations, influence consumer behavior, and even push industries to do things differently - whether right or wrong. This led me wondering that the ripple effect of these endorsements can be profound, especially from a sustainability perspective. What starts as a message to a dedicated fanbase can grow into a larger movement, encouraging more people to consider their impact on the planet and take steps toward living more sustainably. Provi hosted a wildly fascinating roundtable titled "Rise of the Conscious Consumer" which addressed the intersection of diversity and profitability in the Wine & Spirits industry. #wine & #spirits Thank you to Dia Simms (Exec. Chairwoman of Lobos 1707 Tequila & Mezcal), Nicolas Beckers (President & CEO of Rémy Cointreau Americas), Jackie Summers (President & CEO of Jack From Brooklyn / Sorel Liqueur), Chris Swonger (President & CEO of the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States), and Courtney Schiessl Magrini (Editor in Chief of SevenFifty Daily). It was inspiring to listen to a panel of industry leaders from varying races, nationalities, and backgrounds as they discussed a shared message- Diversity is not just a moral imperative, but a proven path to profitability! Dia Simms said, "We vote with our ballots AND with our wallets" to promote what we believe in and choose to support. In today's global marketplace, consumers come from all walks of life and they want to see themselves reflected in the products they select. For brands/companies to treat each and every customer like they truly matter is not only the right thing to do but also a powerful business strategy. When you make diversity and inclusion a priority, you create a welcoming environment that encourages people to connect with your brand and invest in your products. To reinforce the point that diversity is not just a buzzword, Nicolas Beckers stressed the value of authenticity. "Diversity is not just some campaign. And, if truly authentic, your consumers will recognize the brand for that." An action item set forth by Jackie Summers was for us to "drink at different bars with people different from ourselves."
