Introduction: In Nigeria, a country with a rich cultural heritage and vast potential, there exists a group of children who are often overlooked and forgotten – the helpless, homeless, sick, and orphaned children. These children face numerous challenges and obstacles in navigating their lives and securing a promising future. However, by extending a helping hand and providing them with the necessary support and opportunities, we can empower these children and pave the way for a brighter tomorrow. This article aims to shed light on the plight of these vulnerable children and emphasize the importance of collective efforts to build a better future for them.
1. The Plight of Helpless Children: In Nigeria, thousands of children find themselves in desperate situations, lacking basic necessities and a stable home environment. These helpless children often lack access to education, healthcare, and proper nutrition, hindering their overall development and potential. Many of them are forced to live on the streets, exposed to various dangers and risks, including exploitation, abuse, and trafficking.
2. Homeless Children: A Cry for Shelter and Stability: Homelessness is a harsh reality faced by countless children in Nigeria. Without a safe and secure place to call home, these children are constantly exposed to the harsh elements, violence, and exploitation. Providing them with shelter, whether through temporary housing or foster care, is crucial in offering them stability and a sense of belonging.
3. The Plight of Sick Children and Girls: Sickness further compounds the challenges faced by vulnerable children. Many children in Nigeria suffer from preventable and treatable illnesses, which, if left unaddressed, can have lifelong consequences.

More than 40% of these stillbirths happen during labor and birth, and could be prevented with quality care during pregnancy and birth. In 2014, the World Health Assembly endorsed the Every Newborn Action Plan (ENAP), which aims to reduce the number of stillbirths in the third trimester to 12 or fewer per 1,000 births by 2030. In 2021, 139 countries, mostly high-income and upper middle-income countries, met this goal. However, without additional efforts, 56 countries will not meet the target by 2030. Stillbirths can have long-term psychological and personal consequences for parents, and can also be costly for society.
