Enthusiasm + fundamentals = transformative change. #masstimber was a highlight at the Urban Land Institute spring meeting in NYC, and at the nearby High Line (look at that bridge!) Tim(ber) Gokhman was part of an amazing panel that highlighted the benefits and challenges of using mass timber. A common question that always comes up - is there special green capital? Our answer: define special. Our enthusiasm is balanced by fundamentals. Because it’s a newer material, with a yet to be developed supply chain, and many unknowns, mass timber is by definition a riskier choice. it has many advantages that minimize risk, too. So maybe special green capital means a partner that understands both sides of it, and is willing to try to leverage the value with you. What do you think? When we talk about #SustainableDevelopment, our team uses the term "low rooftop density." It's not a term that's widely used, so here's what it means: we want to... 🏡 Limit the number of buildings allowed on DF Development land, to 🚧 Minimize the impact of construction and man-made infrastructure 🌱 On these lands we've reclaimed and nurtured for nearly 10 years. Low rooftop density equals high #forest and #wildlife density, and that's the dream we started with when we acquired this land. Our goal is to be good #neighbors while we build up the local economy and help new owners find their dream #property. Looking forward to your thoughts. 🛩 I love flying into Portland. Live music and great local eats. And an already a welcome, vibrant design. Coming soon, Mass Timber! 🌲 🏗 A recent CBS news segment highlighted the use of Mass Timber at PDX and the burgeoning use in high-rise buildings. Curtis Robinhold of the Port of Portland and Christopher Evans from Timberlab were interviewed and gave a compelling look into how mass timber is not just a material choice but a potential game-changer for sustainable building. While the segment put Mass Timber in the spotlight, it also left out critical aspects that are essential for a well-rounded understanding of the whole Value Prop. Most notably, a discussion on the significant carbon sequestration capabilities of Mass Timber was missing. This is crucial as they highlight the environmental benefits that mass timber brings over traditional materials like steel and concrete. Furthermore, the segment could have benefited from a forestry expert's perspective concerning the sourcing practices, and a brief explanation of WHY/HOW Mass Timber is fire resistant. As the industry advocates for more responsible construction practices, it's important that media coverage not only promotes innovations but also provides a critical view that encourages informed discussions and decisions. The journey to sustainable building is complex, and mass timber is a promising part. #MassTimber #SustainableConstruction #OffsiteConstruction #EngineeredWoodProducts #BuildingMaterials #BuildingProducts https://lnkd.in/eJN4Q7B2

As LIFECYCLE BUILDING CENTER and Jimmy Mitchell and Shan Arora, J.D., LFA, and many others have been espousing for years... there is great value in salvaging building materials. Here's a poignant story of one man's mission to save some timber from a house before the excavators destroy it. Worth a quick watch! https://lnkd.in/eP3F2PTV

Seeing a building being thoughtfully deconstructed instead of brutally destroyed by machines is truly inspiring to me. It's heartening to see that we can still value the importance of preservation even in this fast-paced world. Quick advantages of Sustainable Demolition; 1. Creates more jobs for deconstruction, more work for subcontractors, more jobs for processing material, and more jobs in the future when we start building with this material 2. Community involvement. 3. It prevents the creation of toxic dust and the absorption of toxins by soil during rainfall. 4. There are options for salvaging all materials inside the house, trees on the property, and a system for recycling and proper disposal of materials from the site. 5. So on and so on, too many to list! Let's keep the conversation going by sharing your favourite aspect of deconstruction. Don't forget to repost and spread the word. thank you

Blue is the new black - Fuck Asphalt - Oslos stormwater -“event” today shows us AGAIN how important it is for our cities to rethink their infrastructure. Recap from a post we made a year ago: 1 Zoning plans should stop being static, 2 we live in an ecosystem not a plan, 3 water works in 3D! 4 Start with a landscape strategy! Oslo do you need a bigger stormwater event to happen or a catastrophe before you make a change? No we should act now!! By rethinking and envisioning our grey infrastructure as a parksystem; that is Oslo´s future!
