Have you ever heard the phrase, "If you think hiring a professional is expensive, try hiring an amateur." When it comes to digital transformation, there is only one shot. One shot to motivate the employee base, one shot to motivate the customer base, one shot to motivate the stake holders. One shot to get it right. Let's take a lesson from the transformation strategy of the historic city of Charleston, South Carolina. One of the oldest colonies in the United States is undergoing a massive transformation which is reaping the rewards of a rapidly growing population, an influx of industry and increasing property values. But let's all step back and admire how they are also bringing their long and storied culture for the ride. They are transforming for the new era while staying true to their history. One of the strategic decisions of the leaders of Charleston was to hire the best professionals in the industry to lead their transformation. Proven professionals who have led the transformation of other major cities throughout the south. Is it expensive? You bet. 1️⃣ Always do the right thing This is our company’s first core value. A lot of people claim to live by this, but often it is just lip service. While this value may seem straightforward and obvious, it’s often easier said than done. Would you still do the right thing in every instance instead of taking the convenient or easy way, even if you knew nobody would ever find out? It means prioritizing honesty over comfort, ethical choices over convenience, and transparency over shortcuts. If you always do the right thing, you never have to worry about those wrong choices catching up to you.

Max Depree had an impact on me back in the day. His book, 'Leadership Is An Art', changed everything for me in an instant. Books don't do that in my world. In fact, the one chapter in particular moved me in a way that changed how I defined leadership, and to this day I remember the story, 'The Millwright Died'. In this short interview, Max says, "We all have a duty to ask ourselves Who We Want To Be." As a spouse, a parent, a leader, an advisor, friend, and so on: How will I make a meaningful difference? How will I rise to my full potential? In this world of likes, clicks, selfies, and 'made you look' antics, this is surely a time to become extremely intentional about walking our talk. Convenient lies have always been easier to swallow than hard truths. They just don't ever pan out like we thought. Facing pragmatic reality with the mindset of an optimist is the only way forward. Ask any rancher or farmer and they will tell you that the only way forward is commitment, accountability, and creative determination. They also understand that when you want a different outcome you make changes. They usually don't have a lot of time to evaluate and make a plan. Stuff happens. Discover what we can control and move. Let go of what we can't. Somewhere, buried in a shallow grave are humility, collaboration, common sense, common ground, and integrity. To resurrect them, we simply incorporate them fearlessly in the way we lead. Like farmers and ranchers: Fewer words - Take Action - Character - Kindness - Understanding - Walk Our Values, Even When It Isn't Convenient. Have the courage to lead. Build a culture that matters. If you don´t know how to manage conflict, you cannot be a leader. There are not only courses but institutes which teach conflict management all over the world. What I now wonder is whether they also teach conflict management across different cultures… When I caught up with Yang Liu, the award winning designer and author of multiple books, one of the points she mentioned about her growing up years between countries was constant comparisons. An example of those comparisons was about how conflict is handled in the east and the west. As a teenager, she was often confused on how to handle situations and over time she learnt….the method of fusion.
