Man, this job hunt thing is tough! It can be hard to remain optimistic, stay focused and do the work required to network, find opportunities and connect with people. Ironically, it’s a full-time job! Although the hunt for a full-time event’s role has been difficult, I’ve been enjoying the last few months of contract work. From helping to produce a 5K race with Diplo to overseeing a transportation program for 300+ guests on an incentive trip in Tahoe, it’s been rewarding and fun. I really like the independence and autonomy, and it suits me. As a result, I’m shifting my focus from looking for permanent jobs (though I’m still open to the right one) to building a pipeline of partners and clients who have the need for agile, expert event support on an as-needed basis. It is never about one person. There is always a team behind the success. Whether that be your immediate team, Or the team of suppliers and vendors that you select to work on your events. Hiring the right people for the job at hand can make or break the success of any event. Having previously led a team of event professionals in my previous event management roles, And leading teams on event projects now, I have seen teams thrive because they’re made up of likeminded individuals who work so well together. They balanced each other out. If they see someone struggling, they step in to help. When someone has a major win, the rest of the team celebrate and acknowledge them. But I have also seen teams implode. When there is a misalignment in vision amongst the team members, Where it’s a team of individuals running their own race to stand out. When ego gets in the way and drives a wedge between each other. When building your team to deliver events, Make sure you consider carefully who will be best for the team dynamic and culture. Not just the person who has the best skill. When you have a happy, harmonious group working together on your events, It impacts the experience not just for your team, but to the success of your event!
