My favorite park was full of people doing "fall color" photo shoots and my thoughts were turning judgy.   "Since when is this park so popular?" "Why can't people just enjoy the mountains?"   Sure, it was distracting, sure I had to wait for some people to move off the trail so I could pass.   But it really wasn't a big deal, and my judgy self was just looking for attention.   (I don't like being judgemental, but it's a muscle I've flexed enough times that I've gotten really good at it. So I need pattern interrupts. Brene Brown would call it "perspective taking," a key component of empathy.) I noticed a little girl, whose wardrobe was perfect for the season and coordinated with her family. She had on adorable creme colored boots with dusty pink soles and laces. As I passed by, I stopped, got down to her level and said:   "I love your boots! Pink laces… you must be the luckiest girl in the whole park!"   She beamed, her mom smiled and I immediately felt the judginess leave me. Now it was just people enjoying a beautiful fall day in the park. I'm guessing we could all use more perspective taking with customers, partners, co-workers, bosses, friends and family members, especially when they annoy us.    Not only is it good for business, it's a good way to live. Make sure your costume is light-colored or has reflective tape or stickers so that you can be easily seen by drivers. If you're trick-or-treating with young children, carry a flashlight or glow stick for each of you. 2. Choose a safe costume. Avoid costumes that are too long or baggy, as they could be a tripping hazard. Also, avoid costumes with masks that obstruct your vision. If possible, choose face paint instead of a mask. 3. Be aware of your surroundings. Stay on well-lit sidewalks and cross streets at crosswalks. Be careful when crossing near driveways and alleys, as cars may be backing out.
