🌏 We have just released our first-ever ranking of the World’s Best Cities for Food, and Naples takes the top spot as the world’s food capital right now! 🇮🇹 To compile the list, we surveyed thousands of people around the world about food in their city: how did locals rate the quality and affordability of their food scene, and what are their favourite restaurants, must-try specialities and best-value dishes. Time Out’s global network of local editors and writers then gave us the lowdown on what makes their city an exciting dining destination in 2024… and some of our Time Out Market chefs shared their favourite food cities as well. Did you know that this year marks the 20th anniversary of the New Nordic Food Manifesto?⭐ It’s hard to talk about Copenhagen’s rise to becoming an international culinary hotspot without mentioning the New Nordic Food Manifesto. 👩🍳Signed by 12 Nordic top chefs back in 2004, the manifesto changed the Danish approach to cooking and the use of local products, paving the way for a whole new gastronomic wave. It also marked the beginning of a new era for Copenhagen, where restaurants like Noma conquered the world stage of gastronomy. Today, 20 years later, Copenhagen’s food scene has evolved into a big “reason to go” for many visitors - the big difference being that it’s no longer just about the Nordic cuisine. The city has become a fantastic melting pot of different world cuisines, types of eateries, and new food trends. In fact, there’s something for every taste and budget. So, while Copenhagen is so much more than the epicentre of Nordic cuisine, we can’t emphasise enough the significance of the manifesto. Additionally, it may serve as a subtle reminder about the impact of food waste and encourages a more conscious approach to portion control. 🌮 Customized Culinary Adventure: The self-service model, especially when coupled with a rotating menu, offers a personalized dining experience. Globally beloved Restaurant Jordnær in Copenhagen featured amongst others by Der Spiegel in a giant piece into the world of the best restaurants on the planet and the accolades and rankings that competes for our attention in trying to define who those are. Der Spiegel isn’t just any next magazine on the shelves. Since 1947 it has been known in German-speaking countries for its investigative journalism. It has played a key role in uncovering many political scandals and according to The Economist, Der Spiegel is one of Europe’s most influential magazines. So if you enjoy a very deep dive into culinary matters I recommend you to find your way behind the paywall. A small take out from the article: (translated from German): “All of these restaurants are represented in all rankings, just in different positions. Depending on the system, enjoyment is placed on the winner’s podium differently. Some food addicts have developed a passion for comparing the annual lists and looking for up-and-comers. In the end, all guides and rankings as a whole paint a picture of the mood of the scene. That’s why connoisseurs are drawn to Jordnær in Copenhagen. In the elegant, whitewashed framework, host Tina Kragh Vildgaard turns over the records while her husband Eric stands behind the stove. According to “La Liste”, Jordnær (97.50 points) is one of the fifth best restaurants in the world with 42 others. It is rated two stars in the Michelin Guide. Still. There is already speculation on the scene about the possible third star. That’s certainly not absurd, but in gourmet circles it’s a bit like football: just like millions of national coaches in Germany, there are millions of Michelin inspectors in the world, and everyone knows better. “I don’t think there can be a best restaurant in the world. 1. Naples Must-eat dish: Pizza margherita You can’t talk food in Italy without talking Naples – and you can’t talk food in Naples without talking pizza. A’ pizz was born in Naples in the nineteenth century as a quick, affordable meal for the city’s working classes, and old-school pizzerias (mostly centred around Via dei Tribunali, aka Pizza Street) continue to feed hungry Neapolitans today. While there are certainly elevated iterations around the city, it’s still the cheapest bite in Naples – locals named pizza a portafoglio the city’s best-value dish, a grab-and-go folded slice that costs around €1 a pop. And the proof is in the pie: Naples ranked as the most affordable city to eat out in our survey.
