My children are not allowed sleepovers. Now before you get all crazy, this does not include staying with their blood relatives. No, neither is this helicopter parenting, as anyone will know there are literally thousands of ways that children can develop skills of independence, shared cultural understanding, excitement etc. and I am a huge protagonist in providing children with many of the freedoms we had growing up in the 80's. Slown childhood, plenty of nature, the list goes on. However, the risk factors these days with access to adult content on virtually any connected device, blended families with older, unrelated siblings and camera phones the potential for things to go spectacularly wrong, in a devastating life altering way, far exceeds any of the benefits. 90% of child SA happens with someone known to the person and I can speak with 100% authenticity that some of the worst SA, I personally experienced, was on sleepovers. So here's my top tips where you get all the taste/flavour and benefits of a sleep over without the bad calories. Sleep Unders / Dawn Camps Where parents also catch up with each other (I know heaven forbid!!) while the kids are camping in the garden, watching the sunrise and cooking breakfast on an open fire. Yes, it requires a bigger logistical lift from the parents, but the experience is incredible and the risks are wildly mitigated. Thoughts/Comments/Experience/Advice etc are always welcome below. #Parenting #Sleepover #Children

Strengthening a healthy parent-child relationship starts with understanding how each one communicates. What are your children's favorite meal and their favorite toys? Now tell them, what is your favorite meal and favorite toy? No matter how small the gesture, every action counts. Show your children how much they mean to you by taking time to chat with them, and showing that you care about what they do, feel, and think. #StrongParent #HealthyChildren

Stopping screen time in advance of bedtime isn’t an easy task when we are so accustomed to using electronics all day. 😳 Taking it away from your child can be a terrifying thought. No parent wants to cause a tantrum before bed! But you could be making it more difficult for your child to fall asleep. 🤦♀️ It may look like your child is relaxing, but screen time is actually stimulating the brain! 🌙It’s recommended to dim the lights and turn off or put away electronic screens an hour, preferably 2 hours, before bedtime. This is necessary to signal to your child’s body that it’s nighttime and it needs to produce the melatonin needed to fall asleep. ⏰ Maybe start with removing screens 15 minutes earlier for a while and gradually progressing over time. Replace screen time with another activity. 🎶 Maybe listening to a story instead of watching one. This is a hard rule for adults to follow as well, but setting an example will help your child develop healthy habits. 🙋♀️ Who struggles with this? It’s so hard not to lay in bed and scroll your phone! Anyone have tips for helping you or your child resist the urge❓

So often, we want to be perfect parents. And believe me, I want that too sometimes! We love our kids so much that we just want to do the right thing that helps them the best way possible all the time. Guess what? It's actually really important that we mess up sometimes. Then we get to model what you do when you fail. How you repair after you hurt someone. How you can fix things that get broken. Our kids need models that are imperfect! #imperfectparenting #parentingtips #FailureIsOkay
