I dread going to conferences. Yet, I found myself at SaaStock in Dublin yesterday, participating in a fireside chat about exit preparation alongside Juan Ignacio García Braschi from Boopos. The highlight was an enlightening talk by Des Traynor, co-founder of Intercom, on AI-first software. He presented a simple yet powerful framework for (re)thinking products in the AI paradigm: 1️⃣ Sprinkles of AI: Adding AI-powered features to enhance existing products. 2️⃣ Done with Verification: Leveraging AI to complete tasks, with human oversight for accuracy (e.g., Gmail's auto-suggest replies). 3️⃣ Heavily Augmented: Automating entire workflows through AI-user interaction. 4️⃣ Done for You - the new holy grail: Fully automating functions or teams (e.g., next-gen chatbots resolving 50-70% of initial customer requests in Tier 1 support). As we at Noosa Labs reassess our product roadmap, I'm inclined to progress through these stages sequentially, learning from our users at each step. However, I'm questioning this approach: Is gradual progression too cautious? Are we risking entrenchment in a legacy paradigm where software merely assists users instead of autonomously completing tasks? I'm curious to hear your thoughts on balancing innovation with user-centric design in the AI era.
