Yesterday’s keynote The Fourth Industrial Revolution made us think deeply about the double edged sword that AI is and its implications for education. Carla Marschall and educators like her inspire us to get in with the game and have our thoughts and opinions define what education could be, should be, for the students we serve. Today’s keynote on Radical Neuro Constructivism by Tracey Tokuhama-Espinosa promises to be equally thought provoking.

Rethinking High-Stakes Examinations in Higher Education I recently registered for this webinar, hosted by Deakin University and chaired by Phillip Dawson. In this world of increased pressure on Academic Integrity and with the rise of Gen AI, Dr. Sarah French and Prof. Raoul Mulder, discussed the future of high-stakes assessments in university subjects. Here are my key takeaways from this webinar: 🔍 Key Insights: Pros of High-Stakes Exams: They test knowledge recall, motivate study, demonstrate performance under pressure, and safeguard academic integrity. They are also cost-effective to administer. Cons of High-Stakes Exams: They lack real-world relevance, have limited capacity to assess deep learning, contribute to psychological distress, and can generate academic inequity based on gender or ethnicity. 📊 Evidence: High-stakes exams are still the dominant form of summative assessment, accounting for 62%-68% of marks on average. There is a significant lack of evidence supporting their effectiveness in promoting deep learning and retention. 💡 Recommendations: Retain but Redesign: Modify exams to better assess understanding and real-world application. Reweight: Limit the weight of high-stakes exams to a maximum of 50% of the final grade. Replace: Consider alternative assessment methods like problem-based learning and collaborative peer-learning. 🧠 Pedagogical Considerations: Effective assessments should provide early feedback and encourage lifelong learning. Exams should mimic workplace challenges and assess consistently replicable performance. High-stakes exams often fail to do this and can exacerbate stress and mental health issues. Asad I. and Faqir Bilal from Edly are delivering a talk today at Stellenbosch University, South Africa. In this session, we will debunk persistent myths in learning design and pedagogy, such as learning styles, the 70:20:10 rule, Dale’s Cone of Experience, left vs. right brain theory, and diminishing attention spans, that contradict cognitive science research and hinder teaching practices. They will also explore evidence-informed strategies for designing more effective, scientifically grounded learning experiences. #Openedx2024 #LearningScience #EdTech #OpenedX

Last March, ALLEA released a statement on the importance of early learning opportunities in shaping a scientifically literate society. The statement underscores the need for robust primary and post-primary science education to foster understanding of the Nature of Science (NOS) and research integrity. Instilling critical thinking and ethical awareness from a young age equips future generations to engage with science and technology responsibly. 🔗 Read the full statement ➡ https://lnkd.in/e4WC7QRK #ScienceEducation #ScientificLiteracy #EarlyLearning #Statement

Re-infrastructuring higher education "Article explores how #research and #teaching in many regions are being ‘platformised’ by a combination of academic publishers, the #edtech industry, and Big Tech firms. Together, these processes of platformising research and teaching are integrating universities into complex #digitalinfrastructures for many of their central operations. Universities are being re-infrastructured. They are also being ‘assetised’ as control of platforms and infrastructures allows their proprietors to extract value from the #HE sector. These developments call for concerted dialogue on the conditions and prospects of academic #labour in the #digitaluniversity, and close attention to how emerging technological devices and #systems are integrated into, challenged or transformed by scientific and pedagogic practice." - Ben Williamson Sage https://lnkd.in/eh6thQhu

Dear LinkedIn community, Just released - "Hey Teacher (Don't) Leave Those Kids Alone: Standardizing HRI Education" on arXiv:2404.00024v1. This paper highlights the necessity of standardizing the introduction course for Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) to provide undergraduates with a solid foundational understanding of this interdisciplinary field. It emphasizes the importance of theoretical and experimental components, a universal platform for hands-on training, as well as formal training in reading scientific articles. This comprehensive approach aims to ensure consistency and quality across educational institutions.
