💡What I'd go back and tell my 20 year old self...💡
Recently I had someone 3-4 years younger from back in high-school reach out & ask for some life / career advice.
They were in a similar situation as me when I was still in University - completely lost and unsatisfied with how my day-to-day was looking as an adult.
I'll be 25 in a couple of months - and although I'm far from having my life figured out - I'm definitely in a better place than I was 4 years ago -
here's a quick summary of what I told him, and what I wished someone would've told me when I was 20:
1. No-one cares.
Aside from your parents (if you're lucky) and maybe a couple of close friends, no-one cares about you, where you are in life, or where you're heading.
Pursue what you want to pursue without worrying about how others will perceive you.
2. Don't be afraid to leave.
If you don't feel like you belong somewhere, leave.
Be it a city, an institution, a friend group, or a relationship.
Things rarely change for the better on their own, and there are so many people / places out there who would treat you so much better just as you are.
Don't waste time on people who don't value you.
3. Learn how to make an income outside of regular employment.
Instead of leaning on a job for an income - learn how to provide value to the market on an individual level.
Unlike what they teach you in school, jobs are not less risky, or more secure than being able to freelance / run a small business of your own.
In a business, customers come and go. In time you will be able to predict the flow of customers coming in, forecast how much income you will make that month, and gradually increase your bandwidth & flow of revenue as time goes on.
If you fire a client, or if a client fires you, you have many others to keep you afloat.
4. Give yourself as much time as you need.
Even if you suck at something, just simply doing it every single day for an extended period of time will make you significantly better.
I SUCKED at freelancing when I started 2 years ago.
I SUCKED at managing my team when I started my agency.
I cringe when I reminisce on some of the first sales calls I ever had.
The reason I'm much further ahead of where I was 2 years ago, is because I didn't quit.
I knew that I sucked, but I knew it couldn't get worse if I just showed up everyday.
Momentum can take years to develop, showing up is really half the battle.
5. Stay on top of your health.
Eat good, sleep well, exercise daily, hang out with people that raise your mood up, and don't consume media that brings you down mentally.
Curious to know what you'd tell yourself if you could go back in time. Do you agree with the above 5? Let me know in the comments below. 👇
