Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (#FICCI) organised the 2nd FICCI #Industry #Academia Conference in New Delhi. The theme of this year’s conference was ‘Leveraging synergies: Industry Academia Partnership for #Education & #Research’.    Key takeaways from the conference: 1. Setting up of research centers and incubation centers by industry at universities’ campus will lead to relevant skill development & create a cohort of job ready students. #Universities in turn should encourage tenets of #entrepreneurship and startups within campus premises. 2. Industry, Academia and #government need to come together and explore roadmap to reap the #demographic dividend. The triple helix model refers to a set of interactions between academia (the university), industry and government, to foster economic and social development. 3. Organisations are overly focused on tech skills, whereas- social/soft skills, business skills, skills like- being a team player, leader etc are equally important. As per #McKinsey report: Companies across the globe have prioritized to address skills gap by focusing on developing leadership, critical-thinking and decision-making, and project-management skills, while laying equal emphasis on social, emotional skills and advanced cognitive skills. 4. Need to change how we teach (not what we teach): learning should not be prescriptive. Provision for elective courses puts students in the driver’s seat, fosters innovation and creativity. #NEP’s vision and essence needs to be implemented in letter and spirit. 5. Multi disciplinarity and cross functionality is needed in bringing out research publications that offer solutions. 6. Industry should encourage & incentivize employees to pursue Ph.D and add value to their departments. 7. India is a degree obsessed country which is not leading to creation of job ready employees. Coursera offers micro credential courses from #Pwc, #McKinsey, #Microsoft etc. Many universities have started integrating ‘Industry as an educator’ option, for example: #Symbiosis International & #NMIMS have courses being offered by industry in their elective courses curriculum. Integrating Micro credentials for credit in colleges creates a win-win situation for recruiters, educators, students. 8. With the New Education Policy, educational degrees will come at a lower cost. Online learning will supplement and complement campus learning. Semi urban and rural areas need digital intervention and NEP can support in bringing #SMEs and educators to this segment of society. 9. #AI Tools can aid and assist in making learning personalised and interactive. Need to take #technology in our stride. There are various courses that are in demand for gateway jobs these days such as: IBM data analytics, #Google search engine optimization, Facebook social media certification, to name a few. Identifying & integrating such courses in university curriculum can go a long way in providing relevant skills to college students.

I was happy to have been part of #ThinkEdu Conclave organised by the New Indian Express Group and presented by SASTRA University. The topic I discussed along with my co-panelists: Ms. Srimathi Shivashankar (Corporate Vice President, and Global Head for HCL Edtech business) and Dr. Anil Rana (Director, MIT Manipal) was on --- EdTech and Creative Pedagogy: Is it the new GuruCool? The session was moderated by Ms. Kaveree Bamzai Some of the points I made were: Reframing EdTech Perspectives: Advocating for a paradigm shift in perceiving "EdTech," I drew a parallel with ubiquitous technology in our daily lives. Emphasizing that EdTech is inherently about education, I underscored the need to leverage technology for objective and efficient educational outcomes. Industry-Ready Graduates: Discussing the proactive role of companies and professional bodies, I highlighted diverse approaches to prepare students for the industry. The emphasis was on ensuring students' readiness upon graduation by fostering collaboration between academia and industry. Life Lessons in Schools: Beyond academic subjects, I underscored the pivotal role of schools in shaping individuals. According to me, schools serve as platforms for acquiring essential life skills, transcending traditional subject-based learning. Outcome-centric Approach: In the Indian context, I shed light on the prevailing emphasis on outcomes in education. I argued for a pragmatic approach when integrating technology into education, stressing that the primary measurement should be on tangible outcomes. It was a thought-provoking session exploring the intersection of EdTech and Creative Pedagogy, envisioning a future where technology seamlessly integrates with education for holistic student development.
