If your institution REALLY wants to engage The Modern Learner, you have to think differently. Take that learner and run them through all of your catalog... policies - my guess is you'll find that the institution is not built to serve The Modern Learner but rather forces the learner to go through antiquated structures. After interviewing over 1000 leaders in #highereducation (not all published yet), over 300 Presidents from #collegesanduniversities, and now in my work with Ellucian, I see the reality. Schools want more online learners and force them into what was built for traditional students. There are some basics that HAVE to be in place to serve this type of student - and this includes the some-college-no-credential crowd. Navigating the Future of Higher Education: An Imperative Dialogue 🌐 As Vice Chairs and leaders in higher education, we are at a crossroads. The global landscape of learning is shifting beneath our feet, challenging the traditional paradigms we've stood by for decades. The question now is, how do we adapt? Technology is advancing at an unprecedented pace, reshaping how knowledge is delivered and consumed. The rise of online learning platforms has democratized access to education but also raised questions about quality and personalization. Moreover, current affairs have underscored the need for more agile, responsive educational models that can withstand crises and still deliver value to students. As educators and administrators, it's our responsibility to steer these conversations towards actionable outcomes. Here's my call to action: - Embrace technology not as a rival but as a partner in delivering education. - Innovate curriculums that prepare students for evolving job markets. - Foster environments that prioritize mental health alongside academic achievement. Homogenization in #education diminishes the uniqueness of institutions and stifles the brilliance and #creativity that society desperately needs. By pushing all #schools to follow the same model, we risk losing the diversity of skills and approaches that different individuals and communities require. This factory-like approach to education, where #students are treated as products, strips away their humanity and fails to nurture their individual potential. To combat this, we must embrace educational practices like #Agile that prioritize #creativity, higher-level thinking, and personal growth. Agile allows institutions to celebrate human nuance, encouraging environments where students can develop their unique talents. By shifting the focus from standardization to #innovation and personalized learning, we can create a more vibrant educational landscape that truly prepares individuals to contribute meaningfully to society. Silos Over my forty years in higher education, I’ve consistently heard the call to “break down silos.” Yet, despite this widespread desire, silos persist. In fact, the structure of higher education seems to reinforce them. Departments, divisions, majors, minors, and specialized centers inherently create siloed environments, as they are designed to focus on distinct disciplines or functions. This separation is further compounded by how faculty and staff are recognized and rewarded. Faculty are incentivized to prioritize research and publications within their specific disciplines, while staff are evaluated based on how well they meet the objectives of their department. These systems not only support but also enhance siloed behavior. As much as collaboration is encouraged, the institutional frameworks within higher education foster division by design. With reward systems and structural boundaries reinforcing these divides, breaking down silos becomes exceedingly difficult. While conversations about cross-departmental work and interdisciplinary approaches continue, it seems that silos will remain entrenched in higher education for the foreseeable future. True change would require a fundamental shift in how institutions are structured and how success is measured across all levels of academia. #highered #highereducation #needforchange

The ongoing disruption in higher education isn’t just about integrating new technologies or methodologies. It’s about radically reimagining the role of educational institutions in society. It’s about ensuring that learning is a lifelong endeavor, accessible to all, and directly linked to evolving industry needs and societal changes. Visionary planning is essential in navigating this landscape effectively. We must develop strategies that are not only responsive to current trends but are also forward-thinking enough to prepare for future challenges and opportunities. This means setting medium and long-range goals that anticipate technological advancements, demographic shifts, and the changing nature of work. Key questions to consider include: • How can institutions be more agile and responsive over the next decade? • What skills will be essential for the workforce of the future, and how can education systems preemptively nurture them? • How do we balance technology integration with the essential human touch to ensure holistic development? The challenge before us is significant. It requires bold leadership, innovative thinking, and a willingness to experiment and learn from both successes and failures. Let’s initiate conversations around these questions. Let’s share insights and learn from diverse perspectives. Developing self-regulatory behaviors is crucial for college students, especially for first-generation students. However, all students can benefit from instruction in these skill sets. My dissertation conducted in 1997 found that study skills instruction, including behavior management practices, positively impacted first-semester college GPA. For our "digital natives," these habits are more important than ever. Conversations in education has often been framed in "either/or" scenarios. -Either learning takes place in-person or online. -Either learning is tech-enabled or human-centric. -Either learning is personalized or completed together In the modern learning landscape, it's becoming increasingly clear that the most effective approach calls for a blend of these elements. I had the privilege of engaging in a thought-provoking DisruptED discussion with Joseph Orgel PhD at Illinois Institute of Technology and Host Ron J Stefanski, exploring how we may embrace inclusivity, foster community, and prioritize human connection in the online learning experience AND how technology can serve as a powerful tool in achieving such goals. In a world where technological advancements are rapidly reshaping the way we learn and interact, it's essential to recognize the value of human touch and genuine connection. By harnessing technology to facilitate meaningful engagement and collaboration, we can create learning environments that are truly transformative. I'm immensely grateful to Dr. Joseph Orgel and Ron Stefanski for their invaluable insights and contributions to this discussion.
