𝘈𝘳𝘵𝘩𝘶𝘳'𝘴 7-11 𝘚𝘩𝘰𝘱 𝘙𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘨𝘯𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘴 𝘢 𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘏𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘤 𝘚𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘣𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘕𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘛𝘳𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘢𝘺𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘐𝘴𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘴 Members of National Trust, along with the Bodden Family, including former Statesman Truman Bodden, the George Town District Commitee and the Gov Minister for Heritage braved the weather/rough seas on Monday 5th January for a plaque dedication at Mr. Arthur's store in GT to commemorate the building's historic significance and the pioneering entrepreneurial spirit of the Bodden family's legacy. The plaque observes the building as being of a particularly important historical distinction and designation, whilst the signage beneath tells the history of the store and the Bodden family. The National Trust for the Cayman Islands' Historic Programme is tasked with protecting, promoting and maintaining Cayman's built heritage and our plaque recognition initiative helps us to achieve this goal. NTCI also has an extensive database of traditional Caymanian homes in our Heritage Register, which keeps an inventory of these structures and assists us in determining their significance on a case-by-case basis, based on anecdotal evidence, prominence of persons who may have lived at a particular site and other important factors such as location, materials used in the building of the structure and its age. There are over 300 traditional Cayman style homes on the Heritage Register, spanning from Grand Caymam to the Sister Islands. These homes are just as endangered as some of our endemic species because the materials used to build them can no longer be sourced, as the ironwood is protected and is an extremely finite resource by virtue of Cayman's size and the area it can be found in. The harvesting of coral is also no longer permitted and this was one of the main ingredients used in the wattle and daub method of building employed by our Caymanian forefathers. #heritage #protectwhatyoulove #caymanshistory

St. Thomas’ Church is one of the oldest churches within Montgomery County, dating back to 1698. The historic cemetery includes the graves of 12 veterans from the Revolutionary War. CVDA developed the master plan for the restoration of the approximately 42-acre site that included the sanctuary, historic supportive buildings including a school site, the historic cemetery, nature preserve, and community garden. One of the key challenges was upgrading the antiquated circulation and parking system to be ADA compliant while maintaining and enhancing the historic setting. The master plan improved site visibility of the sanctuary, accessibility, and wayfinding; introduced stormwater infiltration in the parking lot; established a community garden and nature preserve; created new community athletic fields; and provided for overall landscape maintenance and restoration to enhance the historic setting of the church property. The first phase included the development of a new main entrance that improved safety, stormwater management and wayfinding. #historicchurches #masterplan #wayfinding #stormwatermanagement

Beautiful 22.64 Acres on the Eastern Shore

1957: The Old Girod Cemetery - Established in 1822, the #cemetery was located between #Freret and #Liberty Streets and between #Cypress and #Perilliat Streets in what is now the #CentralBusinessDistrict of the city. The former New Basin Canal may be seen to the left and there are several businesses located all around the cemetery, mostly lumber yards and mills. The cemetery was closed in 1957. The property was de-consecrated, and the remains were exhumed and re-interred at other sites – those records are available at the #TulaneUniversity Library in the Special Collections Division. In the late 1960s the area underwent redevelopment, with the #Louisiana #Superdome (1967 plans approved, 1971 construction begins, and 1975 construction completed), the #NewOrleans Centre shopping center (opened 1988), and the Dominion Tower (opened 1989, later CNG Tower, renamed Benson Tower in 2009). A significant portion of the New Orleans Centre was repurposed in 2010 as Champions Square, a pre-game tailgating space. The former Girod Cemetery was located on the ground now occupied by Champions Square and the Louisiana Superdome parking garages. Red Castle overlooking Lunan Bay in Angus is one of Scotland's many endangered historic sites. Between the soft Old Red Sandstone from which it is built and the progressive erosion by the adjacent Lunan Water of the great sand and gravel mound on which its stands, its future is precarious. Large sections of the late 15th-century great tower that dominates the remaining ruin collapsed in the 1990s, leaving major overhanging sections of masonry on its NE side - testimony to the strength of the medieval mortar! The NW corner of the tower stands right on the brink of the eroded face overlooking the river, which is dynamic and spate-prone, even more so in this period of intensified rainfall and storm events. Although described in 1999 as 'in imminent danger of collapse', the tower has proven more resilient than expected but the stresses within the remaining structure are unpredictable and it is now isolated by security fencing. While it would be wonderful in an ideal world to 'do something' to conserve this beautiful ruin - and the multitude of similar sites around the country - the more pragmatic question in these cash-strapped times is how do we ensure that the remains are recorded fully before they collapse further to enable future, high-quality research? Is this the time to marshal 'citizen science' behind a recording project akin to the splendid Scotland's Rural Past initiative, that did so much to transform our knowledge and understanding of deserted rural settlements? Can we organise a 'MacGibbon and Ross for the 21st Century' that captures the current state of Scotland's castles? That, rather than trying to hold back the tide of time at places like Red Castle, might be a more useful and effective way of supporting and advancing community ownership of local heritage, strengthening our understanding of these sites, and deepening our knowledge of their histories.
