An Excerpt from a Religious Studies Lecture to University Students: What Do You Want to Do with Your Life? by Timothy King Lent Rabbi Jesus of Nazareth says, “‘Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened’” (Matthew 7:7-8, NIV). In the Greek text, the three verbs Jesus uses - “Ask,” “seek” and “knock” - involve continuous action. In other words, they involve a constant struggle. The meaning of the verbs is “keep on asking, keep on seeking and keep on knocking.” Jesus, then, is teaching that there will be obstacles in the way of achieving any good or worthwhile goal. That is why not a few people are tempted to give up on their dreams, to quit. What do you want to do with your life? You will develop fortitude - inner, spiritual strength - by going through the difficulties or obstacles that “stand in the way” of achieving your goal. Look to the Almighty as your source of spiritual strength, asking for a courageous spirit to endure constant rejection, failure, disappointment and discouragement. “Keep on keeping on,” persevering in your pursuit of the good. If, as yet, you do not know what you want to do with your life, the same above-mentioned principle applies to you. Keep on searching or looking for what you want. After all, there usually is no finding without searching. You are, in essence, searching for a meaning to your life. And that is not always easy to find. Below is one of my favorite songs by U2. It is, in fact, a “spiritual song.” Its “point” is to keep on searching, asking God to help you find what you are “looking for.” In the words of Jesus, “‘For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.’”
