🌍 Reflections from the What Works Hub for Global Education Conference 🌍 As a strategic partner of the What Works Hub for Global Education, The Learning Generation Initiative had the pleasure of attending the inaugural conference Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford last week. It was a gathering of researchers, implementers, and funders, all focused on learning from the implementation of education reform at scale. Here are some of my reflections.   What I found exciting: - Implementation Science in Action: It was great to learn more about what implementation science is and see presentations on how approaches like A/B testing and mixed methods can add value to research - Behavioural Science in Education: Sharon Schroen from VVOB gave an excellent presentation that showcased a variety of mixed methods including how lab and field tests were used to explore causal relationships and participatory research that ensures the research is co-designed by government and teachers - Teacher-Centered Approaches: There were many presentations on how to support teachers through structured pedagogy and coaching for example but @Daniel Iddrisu from the REAL Centre emphasized the value of harnessing traditional pedagogy in play-based approaches and engaging communities to support children’s readiness to learn. - Cost-Effectiveness: There was a clear call for more data on cost-effectiveness. Opportunities for further discussion: -Gender and Inclusion: There’s a need to explore how gender and inclusion can be better integrated into implementation science. - Embedding Interventions within Education Systems: More focus is needed on how to sustainably embed effective interventions in education systems  at scale - Political Economy & Government Engagement: We need to examine how political economy impacts implementation and a stronger focus on involving governments in research discussions would foster better collaboration and alignment with policy needs. Overall, I learnt a lot, enjoyed speaking to speakers and other delegates and I look forward to seeing how these discussions drive action on foundational learning. #WWHGE #EducationResearch #ImplementationScience #Teachers #InclusiveEducation #GlobalEducation

The IIDS Policy Conclave 2023, Education Reform Panel Discussion, centered on two distinct clusters of priorities within the education sector: standardization and the enhancement of higher education. The five panelists, each representing key sectors, included members from the state level, provincial level, private sector, civil society organizations (CSO), and international institutions, each bringing expertise to the discourse. Moderating the panel was an excellent and enriching experience. Key Takeaways from the Panel Discussion: Equity-Oriented Financing: -To address structural inequity, focus on equity-oriented financing in education. -Accept federalism as a given; shift the discussion towards implementation and effectiveness. Decentralized Focus on Learning Outcomes: -Advocate a decentralized focus for the central goal of improving learning outcomes. -Emphasize institution building as a key strategy for enhancing educational quality. Industry Alignment and Employment: -Align education with industry needs for balanced governance. -Emphasize crucial connections between education and employment opportunities. Brain Development and Standardization: -Ensure standardization considers each child's brain development for the greater good. -Learn from developed countries and tailor education based on children's needs. Independent Governance of Universities: -Ensure universities operate independently for fairness, avoiding influence-based disparities. -Emphasize the vital role of meritocracy for positive change in higher education. Teacher Empowerment and Resourcing: -Resource and empower teachers instead of labeling them. -Stress the importance of preparing teachers for climate crisis challenges. Global Perspective and Future Prospects: -Acknowledge the global perspective of students going abroad. -Emphasize the need to create quality teachers for future students. Meaningful Engagement: -Stress the importance of meaningful engagement beyond education. -Recognize that migration involves a desire for purposeful involvement. Preparedness for the Climate Crisis: -Highlight Nepal's critical condition in the next two decades regarding the climate crisis. -Call for teachers to prepare students to be resilient when facing environmental challenges. Policies in the United States have not reduced this gap by much. Perhaps the only viable, sustainable, and cost-effective solution to narrowing the skill gap is to engage parents in the process. By far most learning takes place outside of schools and in environments selected and controlled by parents. This talk documents the ways in which parent engagement in child learning differs between advantaged and disadvantaged parents and how these differences affect child skills. It focuses on theories from cognitive science that try to account for gaps in the standard economic model. This week's focus is Chapter 4 of the World Worth Living In (Vol 2) book: Potential of Students’ Voices to Contribute to Education for a Future World Worth Living In by Fiona Longmuir This #openaccess chapter examines the positioning and potential of students to contribute to the evolution of educational practices and arrangements that better reflect their needs and interests as they learn to be and become in a world worth living in for all. Historically, students’ voices are silenced through education with the imposition of schooling arrangements designed to meet the economic and social needs of the present. While students are often surrounded by messages that suggest their futures are in peril from environmental and social crises, their education remains confined to a focus on present imperatives. Although many educators are motivated to transform schooling, traditions and systemic objectives that hold conventional arrangements in place have proven to be difficult to disrupt. Bringing evidence from research that investigated the experiences of students who had disengaged from mainstream schooling in Melbourne, Australia, this chapter highlights possibilities for students to be seen as highly informed experts in their own education.
