CONFESSION: My whole career, I have always built teams that felt like a family. Even if I wasn't the team leader, I was still one who craved getting to know those around me beyond just their skillsets. As I have led and grown many teams, we have seen each other through the triumphs and tragedies, but also just the everyday stresses and successes in and out of the workplace. This isn't really an "approach" for me, it's just who I am. As we got away from in-office water cooler conversations, pot lucks, and monthly birthday/baby celebrations with more remote work, the environment changed, but the desire to keep the family feel has not. Not for me at least. I must admit that with the waves of changes currently sweeping our industry, I talk to many folks like me who are finding it becoming harder to keep the trust and care among teams that we are used to. Is this team dynamic at risk of becoming a relic, or is it just hitting a bump in uncertain times? Would appreciate thoughts from those who are team-family folks as well as those who may not prefer to work in that way. Happy New Year, everyone! It’s not perks it’s people. When someone on your team goes on vacation, imagine the relief they’d feel getting their paycheck early. If they welcome a new baby, think about how much joy a thoughtful gift could bring to their growing family. If they’re sick, a warm wish can remind them they’re cared for. When they’re having a rough day, saying “Why don’t you head out early, take a hot bath, and relax?” could be the moment that turns everything around. Culture is not expensive. Neither is kindness. Or fun. Or understanding. Every team deserves moments of connection, laughter, and care. Whether it’s swapping stories, or sharing pictures, these small gestures create a big impact. While others are chilling, we’re making sure the world wakes up on Monday to content that matters. Technically, Saturday and Sunday are off. Realistically, we’re still grinding. Weekends might mean rest for some, but in our world, they’re when the real magic happens. It’s when we refine ideas, brainstorm campaigns, and tackle all the things we couldn’t during the week. It’s not just about work—it’s about passion, creativity, and the drive to make every moment count. Because creativity doesn’t clock out, and neither do we. #weekends #corporate #work

Happy #FancyFriday, friends! This week, I’m excited for a non-work activity! Now that my nephews and niece are old enough, for each of their birthdays, they get to pick an Uncle Day. Today is Uncle Day with my middle nephew and I couldn’t be more excited. The concept is simple: rather than gifting them some toys or clothing that they’ll either grow out of or be bored with every year, they get to pick a day where I will pick them up and they can choose 1- A place for us to go to lunch; 2- an afternoon activity (like going to a trampoline park or an escape room), and 3- A place for us to eat dinner together. It’s become a great bonding activity with them, and creates the opportunity for us to connect differently than if I were just coming to watch them play a sport or having dinner with the bigger family. If you want a work parallel, the effectiveness of this tradition can be replicated within the teams you lead. People act & speak differently in different scenarios. Many of our colleagues are more measured in the group setting. We get to see a different side of them one-on-one. Additionally, shared experiences are shown to bond team members more than just good pay and a fun office culture. Create memorable moments with unique teams activities, both in the larger group and one-on-one. You will see a different side of your team and have an opportunity to build stronger relationships along the way!

Imagine working every New Year’s Eve for 20 years straight. That’s the story I heard last night over dinner with one of my first bosses and her partner, who was visiting Mexico City. She was an incredible mentor, and I owe her a lot. It was my first time meeting her partner, and honestly, he was just as awesome. Over a long, lovely dinner, we got into some deep conversations. One, in particular, stuck with me: Her partner shared how, for nearly 20 years, he had worked every single New Year’s Eve, often pulling crazy hours in his medical sales career. This year—at 55—was his first time finally taking the night off. He explained how dating her had been a turning point. For the first time, he felt like he could take his foot off the gas, go on real vacations, and start enjoying life beyond the grind. We talked a lot about American work culture—how, not too long ago, he himself would’ve told others: “If you’re not willing to work NYE, you probably won’t last here.” And yet, he now regrets how long it took to slow down and “smell the roses.” It was such a powerful reminder that the most important factors in our growth often aren’t about what we do, but who we surround ourselves with. The right people can challenge us, support us, and even help us see there’s more to life than the hustle. Sometimes, we don’t need to hustle harder. We need to recalibrate. Recalibrate to focus on relationships, take the time to savor life, and step away from the grind. Because what’s the point of all the effort if we don’t enjoy the rewards? So, if you’re reading this (and a chronic workaholic or overachiever)—consider this your sign. Take the trip. Book the dinner. Make space for the things (and people) that matter. You’ve worked hard enough. 🥂

When was the last time you exposed yourself? Not like that, obviously. I mean, show a part of your personality in your work, one of those parts that lies deep beneath the protective layers you’ve built to fit in - suppressed creativity. The problem is, from an early age at school, it’s ingrained in us not to take chances - to play it safe - to fit in. That things are done a certain way. We’re pitched against each other within a very limited, out-of-date system with narrow definitions of success. So, we try to emulate what’s come before; or, if we play it really safe, our closest peers. We drive between the rails. And while the idea of working from home may seem liberating, it often leads to isolation and an inevitable stifling of creativity, collaboration, and communication. You don’t need to be a trailblazer. But if you hide, if you don’t expose some of yourself, you’ll look and sound just like everybody else. And in marketing, that leaves you in a very, very crowded arena. Something to wonder about this weekend. #WeekendWonder
