Help please! Do I know anyone who specialises in supporting Disabled folks to apply for jobs? Looking for: • an expert who could have a chat (over email would work) with a Disabled person who’s been searching for work for a while, after being made redundant • tips or resources you can share (Thank you so much Rachael Mole for pointing me to SIC’s resources for Disabled and chronically ill folks - these are amazing!) Ageism. Touchy subject, I know. Something all Gen X'ers in tech are facing right now. I feel like that's what's going on with my situation right now. I have 28 years of IT experience in a wide range of technologies, applications, processes and procedures, and am current on tech. Yet still I could only find a spot with small company who expected me to be everything from the help desk technician for internal employees, to acting as CISO (which I am not certified for, nor was I interested in). There is absolutely no delineation/separation of security and engineering, which would have led to more problems than it solved when trying to secure an ATO, or trying to acquire new customers who demand that level of security and segregation.. I did not feel good about that, and the pay was minimal compared to what I was making at my previous 2 positions (<$20,000 a year). But it was the only thing that has been a fruitful (even though rotten) endeavor in my job search in the last 4 months. At this stage in my career, its hard to explain a gap in jobs, because of this fact. I am not dead (yet) and still have so much to offer. Feels like I'm just throwing my resumes into the void. And it adds to the difficulties of being middle aged, and unemployed in Tech. Not sure I'll ever get employed again doing what I love at this point. 😞

"Resume Tip" Are you looking for remote or hybrid work or are you willing to relocate? At the very top of your resume, it is customary to write some basic contact information. Note, do not write your full address! Just below that, some say, you can specify your preferred work arrangements. Add a parenthetical that says, "open to remote, hybrid, on-site, open to relocation," etc. — whatever kind of parameters you're looking for. I just think it's helpful to let employers know of your needs, wants, etc. what are your thoughts? Job descriptions aren't 100% clear about what an employer is offering. A job listing might say "remote" but remote doesn't necessarily mean work from anywhere. It could be remote from anywhere, or remote from a particular city or state. It could also mean a hybrid situation where you need to go into the office once a week or month. "They always pick someone younger." My 40-something client has had a number of leads, but she's in tech and that's not always a friendly space for Gen Xers. She does her homework, and as part of that, is curious on who finally lands the jobs that she is interviewing for. In each case, it's been someone younger. Listen, Gen X is going to be working for a long time. We've got bills to pay. We've got kids to send to college. Only 25% of us have a defined pension plan. There is no safety net here: We will be working into our 60s and beyond. So, please stop putting us through 10-round interview processes, stealing our ideas in the name of "homework," and then hiring someone else to implement our plans. I just changed my LinkedIn headshot today. It's not because I've gotten more attractive since my honeymoon 13 years ago. I just wanted a photo that represented how I look today. I also took down my #opentowork banner; not because I found a full-time job, but because it was covering part of my face in the new photo. 😀 Finally, I replaced my background with the disability inclusion banner. While I don't currently have a disability, I did have to take a little time off at the end of 2022 after undergoing significant surgery. (Plus, my mother was a special education teacher and my grandmother taught the deaf. They would approve.) Here's the thing: None of this should matter. But unfortunately, it does. When we review applications, conduct interviews, or evaluate employees, we often have an #unconsciousbias or #implicitbias that we can't recognize or don't feel is a problem. Everyone gets older, many of us lose our hair, some get additional chins, some need wheelchairs or hearing aids, some have different skin colors .... the list goes on. You can always say someone is just not a good fit. But it's worth looking deeper at candidates and their potential. A few years back, when I was hiring a writer for my team, I recall a colleague telling me not to consider a candidate because he looked strange. (Something to the effect of him looking like a serial killer, I think 😀 ). Then, I googled him and saw a bunch of great articles that he wrote regularly. I asked him to send me some writing samples. They were excellent as well. Yes, he didn't have industry experience. But he could write. He learned quickly and responded to feedback extremely well. Today, he's an industry expert, a popular writer, and a sought-after speaker. It's hard. But we need to keep trying. Looking beyond the surface -- at the skills, knowledge, and potential people bring to the table -- can reap big rewards for everyone. #inclusivity

I keep seeing and hearing people talk about photos being required during the application process. As a TA professional that’s been trained, studied, and appreciates initiatives regarding unconscious bias, I don’t understand companies requiring photos in an application process. It’s literally undoing all the previous work against ageism, racism, sexism, and any other effort to remove discrimination in the work force. I’m curious to know how others are navigating these requests.
