Why do so many relationships in the business world fail altogether or fail to ever materialize? Many years ago, I was a financial advisor in a past life, a little wet behind the ears as the old saying goes. I was very naive in my belief that my expertise and charming personality would be enough to win new business. What I truly failed to realize at that time, was no matter how great my company was, how knowledgable I personally was, how hard I was committed to work, none of those things meant anything to anyone I was trying to do business with. Nobody wants to be sold to, in most cases it truly does come down to growing, cultivating and building lasting relationships. It took me way too long to learn those lessons, but eventually I began to understand the synergy in truly listening, understanding, relating to and building long term relationships where both parties were invested fully in collective success. Fast forward to present day, I was very fortune to come full circle back to an organization that is fully invested in not just my own personal success; but our very fabric is our committment to partner with other organizations in the sports & entertainment sector to advance their operations and work together partnering hand in hand in sync to make our partners brand shine. Woven into our very mission statement is a promise if we don't perform, we will go away. There is literally no way that our organization makes money if you as our partner does not make money. Optimizing day-to-day routines helps Black owners focus on two primary challenges: raising capital (the top challenge for 40% of Black owners) and growing their businesses (the top challenge for 21% of Black owners). These responses far outranked other challenges, such as marketing, customer acquisition, and hiring, that typically rank highly for different demographics. With an average annual revenue of about half the typical non-Black owner (roughly $70K versus approximately $145K), Black entrepreneurs have less cash buffer to weather unforeseen challenges such as inflation. Here are a few options for Black owners seeking funding right now: Grants: Opportunities such as The Catalyst Fund, Democratizing the Friends & Family Round Grant, and Minority Business Development Agency (MDBA) Grants are excellent sources of one-time funding to kickstart growth. Seek advice: Your local Small Business Development Center (SBDC) offers free counseling sessions to help entrepreneurs navigate their funding options and resources. Visit the Black-owned business resource center. SPEAKER CONNECTIONS NEEDED Boston While Black is hosting a week of events on Martha's Vineyard this summer (Aug 20th - 24th) and we need some dynamic additional speaker recommendations. One of our flagship events will be a forum at Union Chapel as part of the Charles Ogletree Public Forum series. Our forum will be a discussion on what makes a city the best place for Black people to live and work.
