Games In Transmedia: Borderlands at 6% Wow, I think we just had the equivalent of an Uwe Boll movie drop to theatres. Maybe this is a problem of too many cooks? Maybe Eli Roth can't do action comedies, or videogame adaptations, or anything but horror movies? 06% on Rotten Tomatoes is very bad. Now the audience score is 48%. That diff would fly if it was a Will Smith fantasy orc cop movie to Netflix (look it up), but not 6% in theatres. Sorry Gearbox. Eli Roth appears to have fumbled the ball badly. This is like a self-goal. https://lnkd.in/gJQykc-2 ---- Engadget: "Borderlands’ single-digit Rotten Tomatoes rating can make you taste the bloody hatred. Critics are calling Eli Roth’s film adaptation of the zany first person shooter “sad,” “routine” and “mass-produced pabulum.” We’re less than a day away from the premiere of the Borderlands movie based on the violent, treasure-hunting comedy adventure games from Gearbox Software. Unfortunately, the vast majority of its reviews are wishing it never went beyond its gaming phase. Rotten Tomatoes rounded up 34 reviews of Eli Roth’s adaptation of the Borderlands games and so far, it’s earned a freshness rating of 3 percent. Only one of the included critics have given the movie a positive review. So what are the rest of the critics actually saying about this movie? Well, their words are unkind and that’s being generous. “...a quick internet search of images from Borderlands games yields better-rendered results.” - Bob Strauss, The San Francisco Chronicle “...a horrendous waste of time, talent and pixels.” - David Fear, Rolling Stone “...monotonous…” - Nick Schager, The Daily Beast “...a cheap knockoff…” - Jake Kleinman, Inverse “...the definitive worst film of Roth’s career…” Alison Foreman, IndieWire “...one of the worst big-budget movies I’ve seen in a while.” - Chris Bumbray, JoBlo “...clunky direction...lifeless…cringeworthy attempts at witty quips…” Billie Melissa, Men’s Journal So there you go. It’s settled. If you’re itching for a grown-up action comedy based on a satiric adventure franchise that mocks the very medium in which it exists, just go see Deadpool & Wolverine again." Gen Z Creative Strategist | Data Nerd | Content Producer |#1 Article on Google for "Anime Marketing"
The upcoming Borderlands movie will serve as an important case study in the ongoing discourse surrounding video game-to-film/TV adaptations, even if it fails. The popularity of a video game franchise does not guarantee the success of its film or TV adaptations, a lesson that many Hollywood producers, often lacking gaming experience, still need to grasp. This raises the question: are video games inherently better suited for film or TV adaptations? One might argue that TV shows, with their episodic nature, compliment better the mission/level structure of video games. However, the reality is more nuanced. My hunch is that games that are more linear, such as platformers or point-and-click, tend to translate better into feature films (consider FNaF, Mario, Among Us). Conversely, games that are more complex, like open-world or RPGs, are often better suited for TV shows (think Fallout, Red Dead, Borderlands). Ultimately, the success of video game adaptations hinges on respecting the source material, understanding the fandom, and leveraging the unique storytelling strengths of the game’s format and genre. #videogames #adaptation #film #TV #Hollywood #Borderlands #movie #strategy

A Borderlands Fan Regretfully Reviews The Borderlands Movie As a die-hard Borderlands fan, I’ve eagerly awaited the film adaptation, hoping to see the chaotic charm, iconic humor, and unique aesthetic of Pandora brought to life on the big screen. However, after watching the movie, I find myself torn between excitement and disappointment. The movie had its moments—familiar faces, explosive action, and hints of the beloved humor that made the game a cult classic. But, something crucial seemed lost in translation. The essence of what makes Borderlands so special, the blend of dark humor, wild storytelling, and that unmistakable cel-shaded style, didn't fully make the leap from game to film. While the cast gave it their all and the action sequences were visually stunning, the narrative felt disjointed, and the heart of Borderlands—a series defined by its gritty, irreverent soul—was overshadowed by a more conventional Hollywood approach. As much as it pains me to say, the movie didn’t quite capture the magic of the games. For those who love the franchise, it’s a bittersweet experience. Here’s to hoping the next adaptation does justice to the world and characters we’ve come to love. Read more on: https://lnkd.in/gZFUMJUA 🔫 Have you seen the Borderlands movie? From Bloomberg: Moviegoers have begun to tire of superheroes after a deluge of comic book films. The Walt Disney Company Chief Executive Officer Bob Iger said in mid-May that the company would cut the number of Marvel Studios films and TV show it releases a year in half, to about two of each. Hollywood, meanwhile, is looking to the video-game industry as the next fertile ground for story ideas. Spurred by hits such as The Super Mario Bros. Movie, dozens of video-game franchises have been optioned or produced for film and television over the last two years, from God of War to Grounded. Many of these adaptations are still in development, but the ones released have found success. Amazon.com Inc.’s recent Fallout series, based on the post-apocalyptic games, has reached 65 million viewers, while the first two Sonic the Hedgehog films have grossed more than $700 million, with a third entry slated for later this year. It’s a two-way street: Sarah Bond, president of Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox Game Studios Publishing division, said at the Bloomberg Technology Summit on Thursday that the Fallout #TV show is leading viewers to engage with the games. Hungry producers have gobbled up the options to both mega-franchises and hit indie games, such as Dredge and the detective role-playing game Disco Elysium. Even games with little to no name recognition have tantalized Hollywood, such as the ancient SEGA action series Golden Axe and El Paso, Elsewhere, a low-budget shooter that has been optioned by the actor LaKeith Stanfield. David A. Gross, author of the FranchiseRe movie newsletter, said that even lesser-known video games are appealing to #film and television producers because they have a narrative already established. “ #Hollywood looks for new stories wherever they can be found,” Gross said. “Those #games might not have as much (intellectual property) asset value, but they still have potential. Video-game adaptations were once a laughing stock thanks to campy 1990s films But the curse has been broken in recent years thanks to critical darlings such as Netflix Inc.’s The Witcher, based on a series of Polish novels and video games, which recently began filming a fourth season. Last year, HBO’s The Last of Us became the first #videogame adaptation to rack up awards, receiving 24 Emmy nominations and winning eight. Prestige #television in particular is fertile ground for video-game adaptations because it allows for the type of side quests and exploration that make games appealing. The historic failure of video-game adaptations may have been largely due to a lack of respect for the source material, which has changed in recent years as filmmaking attracted new generations of people who grew up playing games rather than scoffing at them. #gaming

New Post: EA cancels unannounced ‘Star Wars’ game amid heavy layoffs - https://lnkd.in/gef_a-Ud - After extensive layoffs at the publisher, it has also been reported that Respawn Entertainment‘s upcoming Star Wars FPS has been cancelled. READ MORE: ‘Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’ review: this first-class remake will put you on cloud nine Per a report from IGN, EA is shuttering development on the game as part of an effort to cut costs across the board. This is in addition to laying off over 5% of staff members, or around 670 people. In a note to staff, EA Entertainment president Laura Miele wrote that “it’s always hard to walk away for a project”. “This decision is not a reflection of the team’s talent, tenacity, or passion they have for the game. Giving fans the next installments of the iconic franchises they want is the definition of blockbuster storytelling and the right place to focus,” Miele wrote. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Credit: Respawn Entertainment The cancelled title was reportedly a Mandalorian game. According to Insider Gaming, the game was set between Revenge Of The Sith and A New Hope, placing it squarely in the period of Star Wars history considered the darkest, that being when the Galactic Empire was in control of everything. According to the report, players would take control of a bounty hunter and collect bounties across the known galaxy, playing across a number of levels that showed off the Star Wars universe. In a note to staff, EA CEO Andrew Wilson wrote that “not every team will be impacted”, but that this is the “hardest part of these changes”. “Our primary goal is to provide team members with opportunities to find new roles and paths to transition onto other projects. Where that’s not possible, we will support and work with each colleague with the utmost attention, care, and respect,” Wilson wrote. In other gaming news, Nintendo has claimed that The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom was pirated over a million times before it was officially released. Hot Topic: Video Game Adaptations - The Last of Us and Five Nights at Freddy's have capitalized the most from crossovers, both seeing extensive renewed interest in their games when adaptations launched - The Witcher sees strong, reliable bumps in interest with each new Netflix season or miniseries - Fallout is already seeing notable increases across the game portfolio but likely not to the same degree as The Last of Us or Five Nights at Freddy's - But, of course, not all adaptations will change the course of a game - the Gran Turismo movie, Uncharted movie, and Twisted Metal series did not significantly change interest in the games around launch As a reminder, mindSHARE is a popularity metric composed of search, video, social media, streaming, and player data - an increase in mindSHARE is an increase in market share.
