Contending with the Unseen Foes: The Hidden Perils of Construction Dust When you think of hazards at a construction site, your mind might conjure images of heavy machinery mishaps or fatal falls. You're likely to regard the dust produced from construction activities; be it renovation or demolition, as nothing more than a minor annoyance. After all, what harm can a small dusting on your work station cause? However, the reality is more dangerous and important for individuals in the construction industry. This post aims to shed light on the hidden perils of construction dust that we at AIM have been keenly observing. What Dust Varieties Encountered in Construction Might be a Threat? Dust isn't a uniform offender in this context. The risk factor of the dust you are exposed to is determined by the materials employed for construction or the substances incorporated during the original building process. A look at some of the pernicious varieties of dust: Silica Dust: Found when handling materials like concrete, bricks, tiles and sandstone. It's notorious for leading to serious lung problems including silicosis, and is linked to lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases. Wood Dust: By-product of woodworking tasks such as cutting and sanding. It can provoke skin complications, respiratory problems, and even cancer. Asbestos Dust: Present in older structures, despite its use being stringently regulated or prohibited in many countries. Exposure to asbestos fibres can lead to significant health concerns. Lead Dust: Potentially present in aged structures where lead-infused paints were used. The absorption of lead dust can result in severe health problems such as brain damage and kidney disorders. Cement Dust: This consists of particulates that can trigger irritation in your respiratory system, leading to chronic respiratory issues with sustained exposure. General Particulate Matter: This encapsulates dust created from a range of construction tasks. Its effect on the respiratory system relies heavily on its constitution. What are the UK's Regulations Pertaining to Hazardous Dust Exposures? The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) of the UK has defined workplace exposure limits (WELs) for hazardous dust particles under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH). AIM, in its constant quest for industry welfare and safety, has noted these regulations with particular interest. Various safety measures need to be adopted to navigate these invisible threats. A thorough risk analysis to identify potential dust-causing activities and suitable control methods is the first step. A handy solution is using water sprays to suppress dust creation. Additionally, tools with in-built dust extraction units can capture the dust effectively. Installing dust extraction systems such as Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) units can significantly improve air quality. It is advisable to undertake tasks generating more dust when fewer people are
