"This event is a fraud," I said to the head of the chamber of commerce who had just proudly explained to me how the local retailers staged a children’s street festival in the Main Street once a year. For one day a year, the retailers portrayed their street as being child-friendly. But the day after the festival, the street reverted to being child-unfriendly. The festival made a false promise to visitors. I suggested that for the festival not to be a con, they needed to focus on making one permanent child-friendly change to the street and then use the festival to celebrate this new initiative. That way, the festival would be integrated into a genuine effort to make the space better for children and their carers. When I was the placemaker in Struggletown and ran an event called Lounging on High (see photo below), we had two main goals in inviting people to bring their lounge chairs to town on a Friday night and lounge around on the main street. Our first goal was to trial different options for the eventual rebuild of the street. For example, we tested out various locations for a permanent stage. One of the concepts we tested was Conversation Lounges. We set up about ten of these along the street — groups of lounges with a blackboard where anyone could write a topic of conversation and invite others to join them. I thought it was a brilliant idea. But even though over 5,000 people came to the event, virtually no one used the conversation lounges. Testing the concept at an event saved us going up a dead-end and wasting a heap of money (a form of agile planning). Our second goal was to change people’s psychological connection to the street. At one of the events, I saw that a couple had put a tea-towel on a metal electricity box and converted it into their dining table. They were ‘making themselves at home’ in their main street. For me, this change in psychological connection was the ultimate measure of the success of this event — not the number of people who attended. Come on, Keir Starmer , this issue is right on your constituency's doorstep (Holborn & St Pancras). Given Labour's promises to support businesses and cut red tape, it's a ridiculous waste of resources, environmentally and socially harmful to close Boxpark when developers aren't due to start work. The high street is struggling, and Boxpark Shoreditch provides a crucial platform for innovative and experiential retail startups. It's the epitome of retail entrepreneurship and should be a priority for a Labour government that aims to support businesses. Get A Drip mag not exist as a brand today without BOXPARK granting us our first-ever retail location in Shoreditch when everyone else said no. We opened in May 2018 and are still trading there today. Since then, we have provided over 300,000 services, expanded to 37 locations across 3 countries, and employ over 200 staff within our network, contributing millions to the economy. Boxpark has undoubtedly been the catalyst for many other startup success stories. It's frustrating that Powerleague received an extension while Boxpark Shoreditch is left out. Let's ensure our policies are fair and supportive of all business ventures. #SaveBoxPark #SupportSmallBusiness Rt Hon Rachel Reeves Natalie Broughton The Times BBC News Evening Standard Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan Roger Wade
SAVE BOXPARK ! We regret to announce that BoxPark Shoreditch will be closing this year. Despite our relentless efforts and the support of the Greater London Authority and our landlord BGY, we must close due to a planning requirement. Unfortunately, the developers will not start building immediately, which makes this decision even more disheartening, especially since our neighbours Power league received an extension. Since its launch in October 2011, BoxPark Shoreditch, the world’s first pop-up, has created over 1,000 jobs, contributed more than £1 billion to the local community, launched hundreds of new independent businesses, and welcomed over 10 million visitors. Michael Kill, CEO of the Night Time Industries Association, has spoken out on this pressing issue: “Boxpark Shoreditch exemplifies the exact issue faced across the country with red tape and restrictive regulatory controls stalling business investment. This has to stop. People are fed up. The new Government has made an amazing start, and I call on them to reach into the local authority and invigorate the local planning department and Hackney Council to find a solution.” Nadia Jae (TV & Radio Presenter) from the ARIA Winning BBC 1Xtra Breakfast Show shared her thoughts: “Boxpark Shoreditch has been a second home for me. I’ve had days out, nights partying and it’s always a safe and enjoyable experience. As a DJ it’s home to my NJ & Friends terrace party where I’ve had nights I will never forget. I’ve partied with my family, celebrated my birthday, made new friends and even have the bar staff singing along to music because we have such a good time. Sundays I’ve brought my nieces and nephews to day parties at Boxpark, it’s always a safe and fun environment and is the heartbeat to Shoreditch. I can’t imagine life without it. Night life as a DJ in London is already concerning with so many venues closing down, but not only does Boxpark provide nightlife it does something that no other venue does. It provides a daytime experience of food, vibes and cultural events such as football for all to come along and enjoy. This campaign is important for highlighting what a huge hole will be left if Boxpark Shoreditch was to close. Truly there is no other place like it.” On behalf of the 50+ businesses that depend on it, the hundreds of staff whose jobs rely on it and the millions of visitors who flock to it each year, we call upon Hackney Council to do all it can to prevent BOXPARK Shoreditch from closure. The NTIA has initiated a campaign to save BoxPark Shoreditch. Your help and support would be greatly appreciated. My college was compulsorily residential, which meant that all students had to stay in the hostels inside the college campus. There was this stationery shop inside the hostel, which was named ‘Kim Prayojanam’ – which, in Sanskrit, loosely means ‘What do you need?’ This shop stocked only the bare necessities that students required to stay in the hostels – notebooks, pens, soap, shampoo, hair oil, toothpaste, etc. In addition to these, it also contained a few sweets and snacks, which were of special attraction to us. Whatever little pennies we could save from our pocket monies, we used to spend in enjoying those sweets and confectionery. It was a change, a relief from the same daily food the hostel provided. This ‘kim prayojanam’ shop instilled in us the fact, that to live a good life, you don’t need a lot many things. Those few limited items were more than enough to provide us with whatever we required to lead a student life. And that was a great piece of learning we received. We didn’t realise it then, and we used to complain why there were only those few items available. But later on, when we had to actually face life, we knew how to remain satisfied with very limited resources. There was this ability within us that allowed us to stay content with whatever we had. What did your college days teach you? #college #life #happiness #memories #studentlife

Just a friendly reminder to prioritize inclusivity in sizing when purchasing shirts and giveaways. I'd say 99% of campuses have students (and faculty & staff members) who are not your typical small/medium/large. Creating a sense of belonging extends to ways we don't often think about, and weight stigmas are one of them. People who are overweight or underweight should have access to enjoy the same giveaways as others. Please make an effort to include larger and smaller sizes in the options for shirts to ensure that everyone can enjoy and proudly wear the swag distributed during your events. By being mindful of inclusive sizing, we contribute to creating an environment where all individuals, regardless of size, feel valued and included.

‘Cleaning’ is important when we start preparing for the Ganpati Festival. The habit of cleaning our home or office space helps to get rid of unwanted things and add new things to these places. In a similar way, we need to get rid of unwanted habits and build new ones. So what are you waiting for, in this festival, learn habit making by doing this course! https://lnkd.in/drw5_zPb

Towards the end of last year, I accepted a new role as the Programming and Events Manager with Downtown Houston+ (DTH+). In this position, I'll not only plan and execute events but also take a closer look at the strategy and measurable impact our programming initiatives have on our downtown neighborhood. With that in mind, I kicked-off the 2024 events season with the Inaugural Lunar New Year Festival + Night Market at Market Square Park! ICYMI video reel below! For this event, we conducted 600+ intercept surveys, built partnerships with business to report induced sales data, and complemented that with analytic data derived from cell phones. Key takeaways: •Unique attendees: 5,200+ •Average group size: 3.37 •73% of attendees went to a food & beverage establishment in Downtown before or after the event. •On average, each group spent $94 at a food & beverage establishment in Downtown •24% of attendees arrived by walking, transit, bike, or ride-share. •Partnerships pay off! Bravery Chef Hall, who partnered with DTH+ on Lunar New Year promotions, reported sales increased 75% when compared to a typical Saturday.
