In the aviation industry, keeping skilled pilots on board is crucial for both operational efficiency and financial sustainability. Did you know that replacing a G650 captain can cost over $300,000? Pay to fly created an imbalance in the pilot market and unrealistic expections as to what terms and conditions pilots would work for. Yes there are employers who value their staff but others have used the excess availabilty as a means to drive down costs. EZY this year had to increase pay and BA doing pilot recruitment roadshows as I don’t think they are as attractive as an employer compared to the past. Jet2 have been proactive and have good T&Cs.

Who said that a skilled pilot has to be replaced with another skilled pilot? Many operators just aim to tick the box: a leaving skilled pilot will be easily replaced with a newly tipe rated if not even a cadet pilot. This keeps salary down with the believe that the replacement costs are worth compared to a salary or benefit increase. I really wonder how a private owner accept this after all the investment he did on his aircraft, or how an executive passenger would be available to pay for this, but the private owners are very often the worst with this area: for a presumed money saving they are availabe to put their own life at risk! Now on our pilot prospective this might superficially look sad: because this means less time off from work and lower salaries. But if for a guy that likes flying, if I have to look back on my carrier, I paid one type on my own, 4 was offered by airlines companies, including 5 instructor courses, 4 examiner and a senior examiner. nothing on my payslip, but I received far more than the value of 300.000€. Thank you short sight!

….and still too many jobs, especially in Europe, not very well paid and „typerated only“ or „willing to self-fund the typerating“. I hope these times will be over soon.

It’s a no brainer situation, (keep your pilots) this has been oversight many years ago, however you must have a very modern thinking and mature management to see and understand that benefit , right?
