Life’s Like a Bowling Alley.
I was thinking about this idea of boundaries, limitations, constraints, and standards and I was pondering the thought that all of these serve us, until they don’t.
The question is when do these serve us and when don’t they?
Because I was thinking about how the most creative solutions are those found within constraints and limitations.
Yet at the same time, what limitations are we putting on ourselves that are constraining our growth and our dreams.
When do we need to set boundaries on ourselves and when do we take those boundaries off to explore.
And then a bowling alley popped into my mind, and it seems to be a have a pretty good answer to that question.
There are two types of bowling – with and without bumpers.
What I realized is that bumpers constrain us as a way that keeps us focused and constrained on our goals. Bumpers are our decision to ourselves to be disciplined, to remove the distractions, to hold ourselves accountable, and to show up for ourselves.
When we remove those bumpers, we then give ourselves permission to experiment, explore, and question our current ways. The purpose is to go off the beaten path to discover something we didn’t know about before.
Life is like a bowling alley – the question to ask yourself is, when do I need the bumpers and when do I need to take them down?
